Well, we had another day Friday where good ole boys didn't have enough to do so we dug my son's Jeep out of the barn, fired it up, washed it off and went cruising. Had a nice lunch in town , got a six pack and checked the crops out. The neighbour beside me planted corn two weeks to the day on Sunday, after digging up several kernels for observation the best description is as follows. The seed is swollen up , the ends are just broken open and a sprout is just visible to the naked eye. The average sprout would be less than 1/16th inch, it has been just too cold, had a snow on it for about 4 days. I would guess if it warms up it will survive, but if we get more cold and rain those kernels could become biomasses....rotted...the jury of three is still out here, but no regrets that we didn't get our seeding done, feel there is lots of time and this early seeding may not make it....Mike in Exeter Ontario

Not familiar with the hybrids that are planted in Canada. But, most people that plant during cooler April temperatures--the Texas Panhandle up to your area, plant too early. Many people plant early to get the corn to tassel, silk, and pollinate in "cooler" weather, before the typical hot mid-summer temperatures occur, ie to avoid stress -- but cold weather is stressful too, and results in lower yields. IMO, more so than the normal hot conditions. I have done replicated planting date studies that show that. Early May beat early April every year in my studies.

CNKS: I agree 100%, the date may vary across this continant, but those planting date tell the truth every time. I always said, " Corn seed that takes more than 10 days to emerge is corn seed better left in the bag." I like to see it in 7 or 8 days.

I had a neighbor,(now deseased) back in Nova Scotia, always claimed if you could remove your trousers and underwear and comfortably sit bare buff in the soil for 1/2 hour it was time to plant corn. I never saw him do this. I have never tried this, however at times in early spring, having had to lie on ground under some piece of equipment repairing something, I am not about to question his judgement.

CNKS, I agree with you, the weather turns spring like and some folks just rush to get'r done, forgetting to look at the calendar, mid April is too early for corn in most years in southern Ontario, we've had it wet for a while now, so I figure about the time it warms up and dries up it will be about the right time to plant corn...First week of May for around here anyway...Mike in Exeter Ontario

not O/T at all Mike. You plant with a Farmall don't you? Our Club is planting 20 acres of corn so we can play but as it has been cool here too will leave the seed in the bag til next week sometime.
