Will E-85 Work in Farmalls?

Anyone know if a a Farmall Utility 300 will burn E-85 fuel? We were about to order some gas and I read an article in Grass and Grain about E-85. It runs about 60 cents cheaper than regular unleaded. We don"t know if we can get it delivered or anything, but it is quite a bit cheaper, so we thought we check into it. My buddy, Harold, said ethol or ethanol used be quite a bit higher than regular gas. They are making it at several different locations in Kansas right now. The article said that many people drive flexible fuel vehicles and don"t even know it. The Ford Taurus will burn ethanol since 1995.

It'll run fine ,but you got to change the timing a little to get it right. You have to time it like a propane powered engine. You won't get quite as much power as real gas and it'll still burn a little more ,but it'll run fine. I have run several tanks through the 2N ford and around 100 gal through the K gleaner combine last fall. I don't know why the timing has to be advanced to run right, but it does. Also ,it will clean up the fuel system,so a new filter might be in order.

I"m no expert on ethanol, but have heard that it will eat away rubber seals. Probably won"t work too well.

unless you raise the compression ratio your results will be poor.

Cowman , did you mean what you just said, or am I misunderstanding your response. If E-85 is a lower grade fuel wouldn't the old dual fuel tractors with LOWER compression run well on it and high compression engines run poorly ? I bought a new Formula Firebird a few years back and because of the high compression I had to use high octane fuel or it wouldn't run right....Now I got a stock question for you..got another Angus bull, small ears and a short tail, otherwise shows good breeding..those two characteristics throw backs in genetics...good temperment too..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Two things about alcohol. First, ethanol burns slower than gasoline, thus the need to advance the timing so that the “explosion” occurs at the most efficient time relating to piston location. Second, ethanol has less energy (lower number of BTU’s) than gasoline per unit, the way this can be offset is to raise the compression ratio.

heavier fuels like kerosene and distilate use lower compression. alcohol is a light fuel. I don't know nothin'
Cattle buyer still purchase cattle by sight. if they don't look good they ain't gonna sell good. Short ears? Short tail? I'd eat him.

Hi- my understanding of adding alcohol to fuel like e85 is that it can be more corrosive to the fuel system because of the water it picks up and can mix with very easy. The flex-fuel cars put out by Ford and Chrysler use better fuel pumps, stianless steel fuel lines and water sensors in case of excessive contamination. Other than that the rest of the engine is the same. Race cars are able to run alcohol strait and get great power but they run 15to1 compression to do it because the alcohol runs colder. The farmall has a very basic fuel system and should be fine in my opinion on the e85, however some basic precautions of keeping the fuel clean and not letting it sit around in the tractor for months at a time to corrode things up. Also turning the timming up will help with the slower burning fuel and making it run better. Happy tractoring! DAN
