I have an H with a 6' Arts way mower deck on it. When I got it the blades where as dull as any I have ever seen with some good nicks in them. I have always done my lawn mower blades on my bench grinder and they came out ok. These blades are much larger and harder. I had a hard time trying to keep the bevel right with the round grinder wheel. Not sure I made them any better. Does anyone have any secrets they are willing to share about doing a good job on these types of blades?
Thanks,
Paul

Try a 41/2 or 5 inch angle grinder with a 40 grit flap wheel. Nothing better.

I use a hand file, and they come out great. Balancing doen't seem to be so much of an issue when I do it this way.

I use a 4 1/2" grinder, grind and then balance, after balanced I use a 3" scotch brite pad on a right angle die grinder and polish the edge up, makes for a long lasting edge and they look great too.

I have for years used a 9 inch flat disk with stick on sanding disks for sharpening mower blades. This is a bench tool, part of a 6X48 belt sander that is actually intended for wood working. I've found the flat disk works great for sharpening mower blades, much better than a bench grinder. Use a course disk. 80 grit is OK, but 60 is better. You can get your bevel exactly with this and it does not heat the blade so you lose the temper in the steel and it cuts fast. The disk is aluminum, so I think it must conduct the heat away and that is what keeps the work cool. One stick on disk is good for sharpening several blades. I've sharpened blades on occasion for friends and they are always impressed with the results on their blades.

I also use my 4 and 1/2" angel Grinder but I use a grinding disc not a wheel disc works much better as long as you dont have to do a lot of shaping. JON

I don't know if what I do is right but here is what I now do. I use my hand grinder instead of my bench grinder. I think I can control the angle better and it seems to go fast.
