ummm, rotor not lined up on distributor?

I align the timing mark on the flywheel. Make sure that #4 is in firing position, piston is Top Dead Center and both valves rocking. So it is in firing position. I remove the cap and see that the rotor has already passed 4 and is 1/2 way to the next plug to fire, 2. So, instead of being dead on, it is between cylinders.... How do I make that darn rotor point exactly to that plug wire on the distributor cap, it is like I said, traveled past it, 1/2 way to the next cylinder ready to fire. please help! This is the last thing to accomplish before I put the battery on and crank her over.

You need to remove No1 plug near the radiator and hold your thumb or finger over the hole while someone hand cranks the engine over. You keep turning the engine until you feel compression against you your thumb. Once you feel the this compression look for your timing mark on the flywheel and slowly keep rotating the engine until
your timing marks are aligned. Both valves on No1 should be closed now. Look to see where your rotor is pointing, should be at No1 in the distributor. If it isn't gently pull distributor
and rotate the rotor to No1 and reinstall the distributor. Place the distr. cap on the distrbutor and look to see where No1 position is
if you can't determine where No1 is. I think it should be marked. Recheck the plug wires too. See which way the distr. turns I think most are
CW and follow the firing starting with No1, then
No3 is next, then 4 and 2 on a four cylinder. Hal

top dead center is supposed to be with #1 cyl.. not #4

If both valves are rocking, then you are at the top of the exhaust stroke. The plug should fire at the top of the compression stroke.

Yes, it depends on what you mean by rocking. I took that to mean "loose", both valves seated. If both rockers are tight, valves are off their seats, and the exhaust stroke means he is 180 degrees out on the distributor.

You have the points just opening as well?

If so, you can pull the distributor out and rotate it one tooth or two to bring it closer into alignment. It does not have to be perfect, just close. In operation the spark is advanced so the rotor should not point before the perfect lineup, but a little after.

did not fine tune it to the moment where the points were opening. So, I must unbolt the distributor and move it around on the assembly drive gear til it points darn close. ok.
