SA Oil Pressure

I was plowing a couple weeks ago, pulling up sod for a new plot and working her pretty hard and deep. Looked down at the oil pressure gauge under load after about an hour of hard work and it was just about at 0. I noticed it going down slowley then forgot about it until I saw the 0. Shut it down let it cool 15 min, got curious and fired it back up. Oil pressure was just about center. Whats this all about?

Ya, thats kinda what I thought. This engine was supposed to have been rebuilt just before it came to the stable. Guess you cant always trust what people say. Oil pressure is ok any other time, its just when your running at max load.

Ill look into it this fall, meanwhile I have another sa I can use.

As oil warms up its viscosity changes and it gets thinner. Because it is thinner, it moves through the small openings in the engine easier. This is good because then it is getting where it should and lubricating, but bad because it will also move out of where it should be through small holes or worn areas.

Brain has a good place to start with the oil pump, and yes there is a very thin gasket which may also have a blown out spot. I�d suggest checking that first, my B had the same issues your SA does and I found a blown out pump gasket.

If the oil pump doesn�t seem to be the problem or fix your oil pressure issues, then it�s time to pull the crankshaft bearings (both rods and mains) and check them for scoring or excessive wear. If that you find a bearing or bearings that are bad, then just because I�m a fanatic, I�d pull the engine and go through it from top to bottom and install new camshaft bearings. A lot of those old engines were overhauled �in frame� and the camshaft bearings have never been replaced. They do wear and can be the cause for low oil pressure also.

I"m sure you will get more replies on this, but sounds like the oil pump cover which is on the bottom of the pump has become slightly warped. Very common on these tractors. When the tractor gets up to temp, the oil leaks out and the pressure drops. The solution is simple, just pull the pan off (make sure you get all the bolts including the ones at the very rear to get that pan off). The oil pump will be right there, just remove the pick up by taking out the cotter pin and pulling it out, then remove the cover, clean it up, run in over some emery cloth on a flat surface. I can"t remember wether there is a gasket or not, others will comment.
