My A has a 5' belly mower and gets hot after 15 minutes of running. It dosent appear to have a water pump. It is full of antifreeze, Do you think it could have a bad head gasket?
Where should I start??

I have a 1940 A as well. Like yours it to is equiped with the same size belly mower. I use it for finish mowing around the old home-place. I live in Texas so the climate is relatively warm. I assumed that my tractor was running hot because it would expell coolant from under the radiator cap after running for 15 minutes. I posted a question several months ago about that problem and learned that I simply had the radiator to full.

As Gene suggested, you may need to flush your cooling system. The manual says to do this every 400 hours of operation by draining the cooling system and fill with 2 pounds of washing soda (avaliable in laundry soap dept of your grocery store) and 13 quarts of water, run engine until hot, drain and flush with clean water. I suppose modern radiator flush-n-clean stuff would do the same. Dont go past 50/50 solution of anitfreeze/water.

You probably have a somewhat plugged block. Remove the radiator and the lower outlet housing. Then with an air hose and water pressure you should be able to flush out the lower portion of the block. With a good lite you can look in there and using a piece of stiff wire clean the four nickle sized holes that let the water down by the sleeves to circulate as chances are there is lots of sludge in there. Would also be a great time to add a water pump that is used on the C. This would end all problems. Lots of have been done this way all extra you need is the longer fan belt. Dont worry about the radiator it is just fine.

ok I hope ya ain"t making the same mistake I did, using pure anti-freeze..if it has no water mixed in it won"t circulate.I was told this is because pure anti-freeze doesnt expand properly.I watered it down to around 50-50 and it seems to be ok..and another tip, dont fill it to the top, leave a inch or so,or it will just burp it back out when it warms up.I hope its this and not the head.good luck

How hot is it getting? You may hear some rumbling in the radiator at normal temps. Does the mower turn reasonably easy? This tractor should be able to handle that mower in "normal cutting". Dave.

Mark,

How are you determining that it is "hot"? It has a thermosyphen cooling system in which, for simplicity sake of discussion, the water has to get hot to recirculate and cause the cooling process.
