404 hydraulics whinning

I just bought the tractor with a loader, about a month and a half ago. I used the tractor a couple of times before checking the hyrdo fluid level. Bought the service and operator manual, so I could possibly work on it if need be. I don"t know if it is a coincidence, but ever since I opened the filler plug to the hydraulics the pump is whinning like crazy. I have since changed the hydro filter, but now it squeals even worse than before and my hydraulics are barely working. I assume there is air in the lines because of the jerking action of the steering loader and 3pt, but I am afraid of tearing up the hydro pump since it is squealing/whinning soo loud, even though the manuals state, to run the systems 10-12 times to bleed air. This squeal/whin only happens when the hydraulics are being used with or without a load on them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 240 that started that. I had replaced the 3 pt leaver and when I unhooked the hydraulic cylnder I lost some fluid. I added more hydraulic fluid and the whinning quit. I don't know if thats your problem or not though. Good Luck

I think the whining is caused by cavitation, that is, it can't suck in enough fluid to fill the cavity created by the rotation of the pump so sucks air in with what fluid it gets. This is usually caused by low fluid levels or stopped up filters or some obstruction in fluid movement.
