Belt pulley seal on a C

Would anyone happen to have a aftermarket part number for the seal to replace the belt pulley shaft oil seal on a C? Just came from the dealer and it is no longer available. It has leaked a long time, but is really throwing it out now that I changed the tranny oil, and refilled the housing on the belt pulley assembly. Parts guy suggested taking the old seal out, and taking it to Napa to try to cross reference (if it has a number on it).

I had the same problem. If you don't need to use the belt pulley, I have a solution to how I fixed it. A picture of it is on the "Parts & Pieces" link at the left. Under: "1951 Farmall C-Belt Pulley Shaft Cover", I think it is about the 4th or 5 page. I also sent a note into the forum, couldn't get the photo on, but if you type "Belt Pulley Shaft Cover for Farmall C" in the search block, and hit the go button, the notes will come up.

I also came up with a National part number in case someone in the future is searching trying to find info. CR number should be 13602 National number 472287, dimensions - 1.375 ID, 2.106 OD, and seal width is .312. No one had one in stock but the local auto parts store said they can have me one in the morning. Good idea about using the silicone to seal between the sleeve and shaft - I will try that although I will be happy with anything better than the oil slinging mess I have now. The old seal is completely shot and is basically running out when the PTO is on. Thanks again for everyones help.

This is a real piece of engineering. As someone else stated, the seal rides on the spacer and not on the shaft itself. The shaft is splined for most of it's length. The spacer only contacts it in an area about a half inch long after the splines end. The only way to seal it completely is to use permatex or silicone or something between the spacer and shaft in that area.

Thanks all for the replies. I will try the CR part number TDK had at the local NAPA. I removed it last night, and brought it with me to try to match the seal. The sleeve is there and intact, but there sure is a lot of slop between the seal and the sleeve.

What kind of dealer are you talking about of course they are avail. Take the pulley off and remove the three capscrews that hold the seal and take it to any parts store and they will be able to get you a new one.

I think this is the same setup as my BN. Besides the seal (which I'm sure is available thru your dealer) there is a tube that fits over the shaft. The oil seal rides on this tube which will be worn also. My dealer had this part too. I must tell you that with a new tube and two new seals my BN still leaks a little. Dave.

I was able to get a seal from Case\IH about two years ago. I am headed out for the day but if you need the IH part number drop me an e-mail and I will be back in the office tomorrow.

The C/R seal number is 13602. Any auto parts store should be able to get it by using this number.

You don't need the number for Napa, just the outside dimension of the shaft, and the inside dimension of the housing

Thanks Dave. I will probably take the retainer off tonight and take it along. Hopefully they can come up with something. It is throwing oil all over the old #31 sickle mower I have on. Luckily the shield keeps me dry.

On my Super C, it had a rubber seal around the pulley housing that fit inside the tractor housing. This looked like a large diameter o ring, but very small diameter. IH did not have this oring, and I tried using a standard oring of about 1/8, but was too think. It sheared it on installation. If this is the problem you are encountering, you will need to buy an oring kit, and make up the right size oring for it.

Mine is leaking from the seal on the belt pulley shaft itself. It has leaked ever since I can remember, but it has gotten worse. Dad used to have an old rag tied around the shaft which soaked up most of the oil, keeping it from flinging it everywhere. That was probably 35-40 years ago. I guess it is time to replace.

Good one...that was during the 'slow drip' stage though. It is way past that stage now.
