Well I thought I would mention this on our forum, this is one of Canada's holiday long week ends to celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria, great grandmother to the present Queen. It signifies the beginning of summer, the cottage season, the opening of resorts, fireworks, partying, generally a big week end in the scheme of holiday week ends....and if you Americans hadn't left the fold in 1776...you'd all be having a long week end and a paid holiday!!!! heh heh heh.. Mike: Having said what I did about 4 day parties, ironically Newfoundlanders being just about as far as you get from the US border in Canada, have a Newfoundland drinking song. One of the lines in that song goes like this, " For the second time since we've been here, it's getting dark again."

I once attended one of their functions, and a group called the Irish Descendants were performing this song. Those guys were belting out this song and man they looked like they had been there for two sunsets. Shortly after moving to Ontario, I met a guy down in St Thomas, who in his daily routine worked with a lot of Newfoundlanders. He was of the opinion that no one anywhere else in Canada knew how to enjoy a party as much as Newfoundlanders.

Newfoundlanders unlike the Americans who left the fold in 1776, only joined the fold in 1949. Believe me a good many of them have had their regrets since.

Mike: I wouldn't speak out too much about anyone leaving the fold. They had good reason. As for poor old Queen Victoria, I doubt if she would be awfully proud of her progeny, were she still alive.

As for the hollidays, man has always used a good imagination, if he wanted to have a party.

One thing I've noticed since moving here to SW Ontario, thus being next door to MI, NY, etc. Having lived in Nova Scotia we had little contact with Americans other than summer tourist season. What I'm seeing on this July 1st-4th item. This near the border both sides use it as a good excuse for a 4 day party. This is probably an item people that live far from the border, on both sides never gave much consideration. It was new to me.

It also signifies the start of nice weather and tractor wrenchin and sunday tourin! Tomorrow we are goin to grandma"s to clean up the yard, and i will make sure there is a spot for the thresher in the shed to! There will just be Coke and hotdogs, not brats and beer there!

I'm guessing there, just like most of my advice here on YT.
One of my younger sisters married a nice Canadian chap. I had all these years secretly envied him the fact that he was born into substantial wealth. Then one day last week I was in a new store in one of our malls, the World Market. There were two prices on every item. One was our price and the other, the price they charge Canadians. Poor fella, he has to have his wife go in and buy the stuff to avoid paying twice as much.
I feel that that's xenophobic discrimination and something should be done.

2 price tags on item? Canadian dollar is less than American dollar- store is taking both currencies, probably credit cards also in both $. Known to be done around border areas, some Windsor/Detroit stores known to work both currencies, Thunder bay area also according to friend who took a trip up there. RN

Guys:

Mike has touched on an interesting topic. See, we up here get to have the best of both worlds. We have our Victoria Day weekend AND we get to have our July 1st holiday which used to be known as Dominion Day back when I was a youngster and is now known as Canada Day.

However, and this is the important part!

Not only do we start partying on July 1st, it usually runs right through to the end of July 4th!

I too like to celebrate with brats and beer - the more the merrier, although this year, I am going to have to be verrrrry careful - 1 brat and 1 beer. Jeez, that sounds like a tune from George Thorogood and the Destroyers! :-))

Seems to me we do about the same thing around the 4th of July. :>) Paid holiday for a lot of folks, parties, fireworks, and celebrating the fact that we are not part of the fold any longer.

Having a farm weekends off don't mean much, but we do have a tractor pull scheduled for the 4 of July. But then you "in the fold" people don't seam to happy to celebrate the 4th with us. Enjoy your weedend. Jake
