We tried starting the cub today by pulling it real slow behind a pickup. It would crank over and run a little while it was pulling. The muffler was not on it and there was some flame from the pipe. It would not run on its own if the clutch was in. What adjustment should I try to keep it running? Thanks

Your compression is low. Could be stuck or worn
rings and a worn cylinder. You need to double check that timing. Bring No1 piston up on compression to TDC. Mark the timing mark on the flywheel with chalk. Have someone hand crank it slowly while you hold your thumb over the plug hole. Once you feel compreession against your thumb stop cranking for a moment and look for timimg mark. Once you see the mark, slowly keep cranking until the timing mark is aligned with
the indicator on the clutch housing. You need it
right on the money, then remove distributor cap
or mag cap and look to see where the rotor is pointing. Should be at No1 plug wire. No1 is near the radiator. Hal

Like Magman said you"ll have to do some diagnostics, compression, ignition, fuel etc..
No sense pulling that little Cub all over the place.

I have rebuilt the carb, replaced points and condensor, minor cleaning of the valves and seats, put in new plugs. The compression is very low. With hand crank I got about 30-40psi in each. I am pretty sure I have the timing on, we use the light and it seemed pretty good. I think I will make another gasket for the carb becuase I think there is a small air leak. I just want to know what you think I should try next?

Thats very low compression.I would do a leakdown test to see where the compression is going.Either valves arent seating, rings worn out or head gasket is messed up.You need good compression to make the engine fire up easily, otherwise starting fluid and tons of cranking are in order.

Thanks for the info. How do I do a leakdown test? Is it easy to do or do I need separate tools. Thanks

You pump shop air into the cylinder using an adapter that fits into the plug hole. You then listen to where the air is going:Out the muffler its exhaust valves.Out the carb, its intake valves.Out the oil fill cap,its rings....etc.
You could also have a gauge on the fitting, killing the air flow and with both valves close, watch if the gauge drops meaning a leak.
