Wrench for Autolite plugs?

With all the sparkplug talk recently I decided to try some autolites again (been years since anything but D-21's). I found my old craftsman deep well socket won't grab the autolite plugs!

I pulled one back out to compare to the old D-21 and the champion is twice as deep at the hex head as the autolite. Do you guys have to grind down the walls on your sockets, or is the 12pnt version (or maybe some specific brands) made with thinner walls? I tried two different brand 6 pnt sockets today, and neither would fit (when the plug was down in the head). If it matters this is on a C123 head.
Thanks,
Stan(VA).

I have several plug sockets in different brands or all ages, had to go through them and came up with a Mac that was older that fit in there fine. The rest wouldnt touch the hex because the head interfeared.

I had to grind down the edge on my deepwell socket in order to pull out Autolites on my Super C. It was worth the sacrifice in order to use Autolites. I've personally have had bad luck with Champions, not so with Autolites.

All I run in my 4 farmalls is autolites. I have found that my 15/16, 1/2 inch drive, deep well impact socket fits perfectly on the 3076 and 3077's that I use. Kevin

Thanks to all for the feedback.

Kevin, my plugs are autolite 386, and they (like the champions) use a 7/8" socket. I'm not sure what the difference in the other part numbers are? Can you point me to a chart that lists the differences in the autolite plugs as far as heat range? What tractors do you use them on?

The motor in question is a C/Super C era C-123. I tried one of the plugs in an extra x30/x40 series head this morning and found that my sockets work fine in the newer heads, so apparently it's just an issue in the older ones.
Thanks,
Stan(VA).

I don't know of a chart, I just had a parts man at NAPA one time tell me that 3076 was the Autolite for my '49 H. Then an old-timer tractor mechanic told me to use 3077 on older tractors. They are the same except for the bottom. The 3076 looks like a normal plug on the bottom, the 3077 has the long insulator and the probe part is tubular and comes parallel to the insulator and then turns in right near the end. These terms and descriptions are rough, I know. Anyway, I run them in '49 H and Cub, a '35 F12 and a '27 Regular, as well as several LA and LB IHC engines. Both the 3077 and 3076 use a 15/16 socket and my el-cheapo brand impact socket fits in all the heads without any difficulties. It is a tight fit between the pushrods on the LA's and LB's, but they will stretch to let it in there.

Here's a trivia quiz.....what was Autolite's "catch phrase" during the 1995/96 season? Scroll down....

It was "I feel good",where human "spark plugs" standing in a phoney engine danced to the James Brown tune (I feel good..... ).One of the sparkplugs would talk to the viewer while the others would dance, make arm and head movements....it was hilarious.Unfortunately,Bendix (the owners of Autolite at the time) pulled the plug after only a year.
