Duh! Need to check both petcocks

My favorite M started blowing major blue smoke. A neighbor suggested that one or more rings may have failed and I would be wise to check the engine oil for gas content. When I drained the oil into an empty 5 gallon pail it overflowed! No wonder for the blue smoke the engine was full of oil and hydraulic fluid. I was in the habit of pre operation oil check by opening only the lower petcock. Had I opened both petcocks I might have figured out there was something amiss!

Question is how hard is the front seal of an M &W distributor driven hydraulic pump to change? Any way I can screw it up? Thanks for any suggestions. Dick Davis

It's not hard at all. The Napa number for that seal is #7443.

Probably the easiest repair you will ever do on the M, unless you include changing points and plugs. If the shaft is grooved you may need a speedy seal.

I’m not trying to be smart here, but if you are mechanically savvy enough to tackle rebuilding a hydraulic pump (they really aren’t that hard to do by the way) I would not expect you to have any problems with that seal. However (again at the risk of sounding smart) anything can (and probably has been) screwed up by someone.

I guess I’d look at it this way. The pump is useless now, so what have you to loose by tackling it yourself? With some care the worst case would be you have to take the pump in to have it put back together by someone else.

At least the good news is that the engine isn't shot.

We always used the top petcock when checking the oil level. Hal
