3-53 detroit diesel in a farmall 450?

My Dad has a 450 with a cracked head and we haven"t been able to find a good head yet.
has anyone ever repowered their farmall 400 or 450 with a 3-53 diesel?
anyone know where i can find a good,crack free head for it?

I have to agree with Nat on the chalanges. I would think there are more suitable engines than a Detroit. Farmall 450 was engineered for 540 PTO somewhere in the order of 1400 to 1500 rpm. I rather doubt the Detroit will develop much horse power at 1500 rpm. A good old H or 300 would probably out do it on a baler.

As someone else said, sure Oliver used the Detroit engine. Other than noise for the amount of horse power, not much wrong with a Detroit engine, but the vehicle must be engineered fot it.

You can repower any tractor with any engine. You just have to be prepared to do the work to fabricate the conversion pieces. It's not going to be a simple bolt-in by any stretch of the imagination.

If it fits between the rails, you need to make an adapter plate to line up the crankshaft with the input shaft on the transmission, and bolt the engine to the bell housing. You'll also need to figure out how to mount the engine to the frame in front. Those will be your two biggest challenges.

Might vas well go for the 3-71 and more than double the HP.

You would be better off if you would contact Steel Wheel Ranch and see about having that head repaired.

oliver's had them.and the 400,450 cylinder head are prone to cracking.
