504 3-pt Question

We have a IH 504 with 3-point. We use it for a lot of loader work. Recently I started using the 3-pt with a blade on the driveway.

When the blade is hooked up, I can sway the entire blade left-to-right as much as 2-3ft per side.

There are spots that I really want to cut into so I don't want the blade to have any left-to-right movement. I start to cut in and it just moves the other way. Is there some way I can set the 3-pt to not move left-to-right?

The only way to stop sway is with a set of sway bars, it was an attachment back when, some got ordered with tractor and some did not.If you shorten the chains you will not be able to raise the blade.

Check to see if the chain clevis at lift arm has 2 holes or the link that the clevis pins into. One hole is for cat 2 other for cat 1. Does yours have adjustable links in the chain assembly. Remember to adjust the chains with lift in raised position. If all else fails, sway bars were made by IH for these. Something like the old Fords or Fergusons. I made the bracket and purchased the arm from TSC. Works fine.

Hi Joe,

You should either have sway blocks that you swap end for end or you pin the telescoping laterial limiters, depending on the type of hitch that you have.

So there is a way!

I'm not exactly following. If I posted a picture tomorrow, could someone point me in the right direction?

Or maybe you can elaborate?

What is a sway block and what are the laterial limiters and how do I 'pin' them?

Those darned 504s have chains and no where to put those limiters or really sway blocks. I never figured out a way to keep mine from swinging. I probably had the same blade even. The 966is great. I can get it tighter than a .. well really tight!

What are they? Kinda like the little Fords?

I just figured that they would be the same as the 656 as the 504 looks kinda like a minature of them.

OKay, I've had my "mistake fix" fer today. :>(

You're right. I was looking at those chains and wondering if they would be useful.

So am I out of luck?

I never figured out a way. You might be able to cross chain fron one side to the other.. I looked through my owners manual and tightened what I could but I never figured out a good way.

My 504 has sway brackets under the fenders but I have not found the right bars yet.

My loader has some nipples on it underneath where it bolts to the axle.

I am going to see if I can fashion something between those and the arms.

I'll post a pic if I have any luck.
