Mornin' Guys,

I just got a call from a nice fellow, in answer to a want ad that I had placed, who has a 5 bottom 18" Massey spinner plow for sale.

Does anyone know if the back bottoms will unbolt to take 'em off? 'Cause I just don't think my 966 is gonna be able to pull a plow that size.

I know she will handle a four bottom like this one, but I think 5 bottoms is asking just too much of the tractor, especially in sod. Heck, I don't think even a 1066 would handle a 5 bottom, would it? :>(

Allen---

I think a 14" plow does a better job than a 16",I cant imagine what kind of job a 18" would do.....course That was back in the late 40's and early 50's plowing with a FARMALL "M"--second and 3rd gear--3/14" IHC little genies drag plow,8" deep.

Allan, the 966 will pull it fine, but you may need to get the engine rebuilt and up to snuff.

Thanks Red,

Already did that part; the engine only has 10 hours on it. :>)

Ever wonder if the Roundup/Zero tillage approach isn't the way to go in destroying an old stand of hay? It's cheaper, faster and in my humble opinion does as good a job. Unless Roundup is a lot more expensive in USA than in Canada? Maybe your fuel is a lot cheaper? I like doing things the old way but hate doing things the hard way.

No-till sort of depends on what type of hay it is and other weed problems. Roundup is "cheap" now, but sometimes it is best to plow and bury everything and start over. Also Allan may not have a drill available that will penetrate the hard ground after the Roudupup takes care of the existing crop. Alfalfa has small seed and it can be difficult to get a good stand. Otherwise I agree.

Allan: I realize it's probably going the require a Catergory III hitch to handle the lifting of that plow. Pulling it however will not be a damn bit different than any 5 bottom plow.

In 1975 I bought a new 5x16 IH semimount for use behind my 1066, and yes I was plowing down alfalfa roots too and plowing 9 to 10 inches deep. The 1066 played with so easy, I decided to find something more difficult for 1066 to do and hitched the plow to 656D. 656 hiked along at 3.5 to 4 mph, plowing 9" deep in alfalfa sod. Now I realize my sandy loam was easy to plow. I also had some clay hills and 656 plowed those in 2nd gear. 656 had 16.9x38 tires with no chloride or wheel weights.

All I can assume is some of you guys must want to plow at about 10 mph. You may well do that but it will cost just about double per acre on wear parts. Chasing down little jobs with big horse power just reduces the bottom line.

Dunno,

The fella said it was the same pin size as all the rest of his equipment; he thought it was a CAT II. But, I just don't know til I see the pictures he sends, I guess.

This is what I mean; I've always found that plowing works the best at right about 4.5 mph. Going too fast dosen't work and neither does going too slow.

This isn't alfalfa, it's plain old fashioned sod.

If the 5b is fully mounted, the 966 may not have enough hitch to pick it. Or enough iron on front to keep that down if the hitch can lift it. I think you will get tired of pushing on the steering wheel to help the poor old girl haul 5 around.

Our 1066 has, in the past, pulled six bottoms of a non-spinner plow in clay...
I imagine the 9 will pull it, throttle wide-open in 2 or 3 low, but not very deep. And from the sounds of it, you want to go deep if you're gonna drill in some alfalfa...

Tractor time? What are you worried about tractor time for?!?!?
You need to catch up for "lost tractor time!"

Hi Casey,

It is down in the middle of the state east of Howard's place yet. The feller said he would mail me some pictures and check out all the wear points on the plow. Has been using it for the past 3 years.

Said he broke the pivot shaft, had the repairs and that he still had to bolt it back together.

I know on my old 4 bottom, there was a place to unbolt the back bottom and make it into a 3. Have to wait and see what the pictures look like, I guess.

Another thing a guy has to consider is the amount of time in the seat.

Fewer bottoms would mean more tractor time. This is a tough call! I'm thinkin', I'm thinkin'. :>)

Allan, we pulled a 5 with an 806 and another 5 with a 966 in southwest Iowa about a hundred years ago, when they still plowed, and both handled them very well. Harley

Out here in Washington a Good 806 will only handle 4 16's and most people used 3 18's. 5 18's will need 180HP to plow 10-12" and 5 MPH in our ground. Jake
