International 674 Hydraulics Quit

I had just started bush hogging this weekend when my tractor hydraulics went out. The lift, PTO and power steering all quit working, all at the same time. It has plenty of fluid and I tried changing the filter with not improvement.

Is there an easy way to determine if it is the pump that is the problem? If so, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Clark2, when was the last time the clutch and pressure plate were changed on the 674? The reason I ask is that the PTO shaft is driven by the pressure plate. It is a splined shafted that goes into spline teeth in the pressure plate. The pressure plate is a softer material than the PTO shaft and the teeth wear off the pressure plate. The PTO shaft from the pressure plate drives the T/A pump, the hydraulic pump and the input to the the PTO clutch, so if the PTO shaft stops turnning the hydraulics stop.

There is an inspection plate on the bottom of the bell howsing, I can't remember is you can see much for the clutch release bearing is in the way. The outer splined shaft is the PTO drive shaft and the transmission shaft runs in the center of the PTO shaft.

Please update us with the fix once you find the problem.

I'm pretty sure steering has priority flow and cancels out any problem down the line. Quitting suddenly makes me think pump drive/driven gear or pto drive shaft splines that are driven off pressure plate... or(God forbid) somewhere in between.

I am not sure if they are similar or not but my 684 did the same thing, the emergency brake band came apart and blocked the oil passage. The hydraulics would go out during down hill operation but if you went up it would start working again.

Clark:
While it is probably the pump I had a failure the other day that caused me to drag a sprayer home before I noticed.
I have a two way feed off my system. One feeds the remotes the other the regular system. Somewhere a branch or whatever had hit the lever shifting all hydraulics to the remote. Once I noticed it, and let the fuild cool down everything was fine.

if the hydraulics quit when doing heavy pto work, i would check the hub in the clutch, maybe the rivets twisted off, that would cause everything that is live to stop all at once. the transmission would still work, only the hollow shaft would stop. steve

I would say it is the pump if everything failed at once. I would do a pressure check first to be sure before dropping $500 on a pump.

Unless there's oil spurting out of the tractor all over the place, what else could it be but the pump?

I don't know much about hydraulics . . . just wanted to make sure it was the pump and not some other problem, like an obstruction or some kind of a valve problem before I replaced the pump. Sounds like nothing else would cause a total failure like I have?

It's a pretty safe bet, that's for sure, and pulling the pump is a whole lot more productive than just standing around scratching your head. Even if it's not the pump, at least you've eliminated that possibility, and learned how to R&R the pump...

I have seen the shaft brake in the pump and the nut back off causing the gear to fall off. Remember this tractor only has one pump.
