I came across this website today.

Can this be for real? "Adopt a genuine Sandhills range cow!!!!""

I am a livestock farmer myself, and care about animals...but c"mon, gimme a break!!

But then, remember the "Pet Rock" craze of the seventies? I"m sure someone made a bunch of money on that too!

I could maybe better understand a place that provides homes for abused or neglected animals, but this---Good Grief!

Right now I got 20 steers out in my pasture, and I was planning on making money selling them to where they will be Big Macs next week.

Something tells me I must be taking a totally wrong approach to my business!

up in new england i have seen where you can adopt a sugar maple for a fee and get a quart of syrup

Can it be that people in the cities are this clueless about rural life and agriculture in general?

Here is a quote from the website:

"The adopting parent will have full visitation rights to their cow and when they come to visit will be escorted to the pasture to view their cow. There is a very nice lodge on the ranch for the visiting adopting parent and family to stay at while visiting and will be supplied at a reasonable fee. Upon their request they will be mailed a picture of their cow (no more than once a year). Upon adopting a cow the adopting parent will receive a birth certificate issued from Dubs Adopt-a-cow suitable for framing. There will also be a registration certificate issued by Dubs Adopt-A-Cow also suitable for framing. These conversation items few people in the world will have."

I have only seen this with Dairy animals in states where people want RAW milk but it is not legal to sell the milk so people "adopt" a portion of a cow to get the raw milk.

Or maybe someone might just want a cow so they can take it into the nearest Dairy Queen!

If you take a cow through the drive-through you get a years supply of something or other.

And can you believe the cost? $1000 to adopt plus $500 each year (cost of living increases to be added).

I haven't checked out the website link you provided yet, but I also raise cattle in the Nebraska Sandhills and I've kicked around a similar idea..having people pay to "adopt" a calf when it's young, then they would get updates on it as it grows, through vaccinations, weaning, etc. They could either actually "own" it themselves and thus contribute towards the cost of raising it, or just be able to call it "theirs". Then, when it came of age, and they'd payed for all of it's upbringing, they would get the beef after slaughter. Or another option would be if it was a nice heifer they could decide to "keep" it and when it raised a calf that would be theirs(of course paying for both the heifer and the calf's upkeep), and they could either get the beef from that calf or keep it if it's another heifer to expand their "herd". Of course this would have to be a profitable deal, not just something so people could have "pets". The cost to the person who "adopted" or "bought" the animal would be more than if they just went out and bought the beef in the store. And naturally it'd have to be more profitable than just selling the animal the normal way to make it worth the trouble...but these days people will buy just about anything...

I'm sure there's a zillion other aspects and things to consider that I haven't even thought of with this deal yet, just wanted to mention that the people on that link aren't the only ones who "think out of the box".

Of course you can. I'll sign up first. The little fella will have to come to my neck of the woods and visit this summer. He should bring a plow and a mower, I already have a disc and roller for him to play with. And all of the gas and oil he wants!

I have a few head of livestock - maybe it IS the wrong approach to sell them...
Adopt a Cow... wonder what happens to the cow after it keels over - do they ship you steaks? just a thought.
