If your not interested in saving old one a grinding wheel ran down it then spread it open and she pops right off.

Use a cutting wheel on your 41/2 inch angle grinder and cut as others said lengthwise where slot is. Takes about 30 seconds with that tool.

I use heat from an oxy-acetylene torch and an air hammer. Takes about 2 minutes. Use the larger flat ended punch, not pinpointed one.

I would agree with Wayne. Heat is the best thing you can use. Hal

What would be wrong with putting a puller on it as the other guys have said, and then putting some heat on the hub with an acetylene torch. This way you could salvage the old wheel. It always amazes me how much that heat helps.

Since you bought a new steering wheel, I assume you arent interested in salvaging the old one. If that is so, then if a wheel puller doesn"t pull it off, which in my case it did not, you can take a hack saw and cut through the hub at the keyway. This will split the hub without putting saw marks in the steering shaft. Another issue may be the retaining nut which if it doesnt screw of easily, may be better to split it also and install a new nut. It is wise to clean up the threads before putting on a new nut as many times the end of the threads on the shaft may be buggered up from a lot of years of abuse.

Narrowfarm:

I had to change the wheel on my H about a year ago, and after removing the nut, we couldn"t get the thing to budge. We ended up using a puller on the back of it to pry it apart (also used a ton of WD40). Finally got it off, and putting the new one on is a piece of cake.

Good Luck!
Jeff

A steering wheel puller, even after several applications of Kroil (works much better than WD40 - in fact most things do) didn"t work when I tried to remove the steering wheel on my IH 340 U. What did work was using a 1/2inch drive air wrench on the puller bolt. The combination of pressure and gun hammer popped it right off.

Don"t know about an H, but I tried tapping (not really that hard) on the puller bolt while under tension, and drove out the expansion plug on the bottom of the steering box. I later read in the shop manual that you should not tap on the steering shaft for exactly that reason. Wish I"d read that first . .

I use WD40 to clean the grease off the top of the stove in my kitchen. Makes a great degreaser; eats right through the caked on, baked on stuff if you leave it long enough.
