Depends on exactly what you’re trying to accomplish... If it’s simply to increase the pulling force available at the drawbar (i.e. with no regard to speed), switching to 36” wheels will theoretically increase pulling force by about 6%. However the smaller wheels also will REDUCE tractor speeds by a like amount. And since power is defined drawbar force x ground speed, actual power developed at the drawbar by switching to smaller tires will be unchanged. In reality however, generally a smaller tire diameter = less traction. Depending on the ground surface and the tread style you may not see any increase in drawbar force at all – you could even experience a decrease in drawbar force switching to smaller tires. Also it makes the front end more likely to lift under load. However if it is truly more POWER you are seeking, switching to smaller tires will accomplish nothing. Remember: power = drawbar force x ground speed. So with smaller tires you’re getting greater drawbar force but less speed. So power with smaller tires is therefore unchanged ----- Incidentally the only way to increase a tractor’s power is to somehow wring more outta of the engine – either more torque, more RPM, or a combination of both. (Unfortunately that's an inviolable law of physics!)
