What is the smooth box behind the alternator? Do I need that for a 12Volt system? The red lever along the right side of the seat with the push button does nothing when I push/pull it.

The red lever is for engauging the PTO. The button on top, locks the lever in PTO run position. You should also be able to press the button and push the lever forward to stop the PTO.There is a brake in the system. The black box should not be needed if you install a 12 volt alternator with a built in regulator. I have a Chevrolet two prong alternator on my tractor. If you have any issues with overcharging try installing a oil pressure swithch and routing the wires through the switch. This will allow the battery to charge only when the oil pressure activates the switch.(running at above idle)

..... the fellows are right, tweeter..... ..the lever is for operation of the pto..... .the button pushes in so that you can pull the lever up to engage the pto..... ..release the button to lock the pto on..... ...best wishes, bill

That box is a regulator, and yep its a mopar alternator. Or if you don't understand mopar its dodge, LOL

The lever is for the independent pto. Down is off/up is on.If it does nothing then the pto bands need adjusting or replaced most likely. The alt. looks like a Mopar unit to me. Not too familiar with Chryslers, but box could be regulator. Someone else on here will probably know.
