Hello, I am a new owner of a "53 Super A and this is my first tractor. Today I had a bad experience with a cotter pin (pin too long - my bad) that shorted on the starter switch and damaged the starter. I guess the fuse does not catch any or all shorts? I am concerned at the fire risk from arching near the gas tank and also the lack of a "kill" switch or effective fuse to isolate the battery. My question to all you experienced tractor folks in the forum is are there ways to improve the "safety" of the battery system? (I now know to disconnect -ve before doing any elec. maint.) Any insulation tips etc.... If there is previous post on this please advise. Thanks in advance for your anticipated response.

I saw the heavy-duty disconnects at TSC about a month ago. I don't remember the price, but I thought it was very reasonable compared to others I've seen.

I use a master disconnect on my 300U.I have the battery in a marine battery box,and the disconnect is the type that bolts right to the battery post and has the hand screw wheel that you turn down to make connection and loosen to break the connection.I also have the rubber terminal covers just in case something comes loose in the box.I feared a battery failure/explosion with that thing right between one's legs like it is,and I sure wasnt taking any chances.

Those are sold everywhere.Belden makes one,as does Littlefuse.Check the usual....NAPA,PARTS PLUS,you name it.JC Whitney has them as well. Its got the big green or black knob on top.$10-20.Those rubber terminal covers are sold at Wally World under their Everstart brand.

the fuse only protects the light circuits. Use a shorter cotter key and maybe put the starter rod into the switch the other way if it will move it any farther from the terminals.

That's right, there is never a fuse in the starter circuit. If there was it would blow every time you hit the starter. If you had a 300 amp fuse it would blow on a cold morning, etc. You have to disconnect the battery post if you are messing around close enough to cause trouble. I just put a knife switch on the starter post of my S-M but had to modify it. It was made for a batt post but the battery is in an enclosed box under the seat, not too handy.
