Starting/Running BN

I have a BN that is very difficult to start. When it does start, it runs very poorly and then stops. It has an aftermarket distributor (with new plug wires, timing checked and ok, points ok). Gas seems ok (strainers checked/replaced, gas line clear). I removed each plug to check for spark (all ok), and when I do remove a plug, the engine starts ok (!). I suspect a problem with the carb - it apparently has no mixture adjustment (without tearing it apart?). Also, when I do get it running, exhaust has blue smoke (bad rings?)

Any ideas? Why will it start with any of the spark plugs removed?

Thanks.

I would check the valve lash and set them to .020"
until you get it running. Hal

Pull the valve cover and check for a stuck valve. Just happened to me. A light tap with a rubber mallet did the trick.
