Serial #s - Super M

OK. I went to an auction today in western Iowa. The Super M that was for sale had the letters "C J" following the serial number. Usually the SMs just have the J code. I thought this might have been originally set up as a cotton tractor. The only difference I could see from other Farmalls was that the clutch and brake pedals were different and the PTO shutoff came up through a hole in the top of the PTO shield. Any ideas (P.S. - it sold for $1,700)

"C" is for LPG tractor and "J" if for a Rockford Clutch.

This was a gas burner - not LPG.

As Nat stated it was converted somewhere along the line after it left the factory. Those suffix codes are affixed by the factory based on it's "as built" configuration. Probably a simple conversion from LPG to gasoline but I don't know all the differences. Seems like I've seen on the forum that LPG cylinder heads are highly sought after by the pulling folks as they have higher compression. You might check the part no. on the head to see if it was changed to gasoline when it was converted. If the LPG head is still on the tractor you probably have some extra horses.

It could've been converted back to gas. God knows there are plenty of parts out there and if you know the right people, they can be had cheap. All you'd need is a carburetor, fuel line, and gas tank.

The axles could have been cut. Wouldn't be the first time. Farmers around here have been known to lop off protruding axles so they don't catch on stuff in tight quarters.

Forgot to mention - the axles were also shorter than normal. Rear wheels could only be slid out about 3 or 4 inches.
