Hello All
I have a 51 SA that I am having a time gettin to run well. I have checked comp.-3 holes right around 100 with one about 7-10 lower. Put in points, plugs, rotor, dist. cap. Starts and idles well but does not accelerate much-pulled the governor rod tonight and got more power but still seems weak to me. Just looking for suggestions from the good ol Farmall Hands on this forum. Carb next? Could oil bath air cleaner raise heck with the engines top end? Any ideas? Thanks for any input-Steve

To El Toro, Nat, and Jeff-thank you for the input.
I will try everything suggested-just wasn't sure which way to turn next.
Nat-by weak I mean the tractor runs pretty smoothly up to about 1/3 of its potential(with the throttle wide open-on the carb) and has a very soft "whoofing" type sound. Then just doesn't have any power coming up a small hill or with a little load and dies. Thanks Steve

Loosen the tube nut at the carburetor to see if you have good flow to the carb. and not just a drip. If flow is poor you need to clean the sediment bowl, strainer and gas tank too if you see a lot of crud in there like rust and dirt.

If flow is good at carb. your carburetor needs to be cleaned and soaked in cleaner. It may have a varnish like coating inside the carb. from old gasoline. Use a fuel stabilizer if the tractor sits unused for long periods of time. Hal

Check the oil bath. That's like a 5 minute job. Pull the carb and give it a good once-over. Might take you an hour. Neither of these checks will hurt the performance of your tractor so you've got nothing to lose. Hemming and hawing, asking about it... You lose two days use of your tractor waiting for the answers to roll in. Might as well make productive use of your time.

Now, what do you mean by "weak?" Is it not revving up? Is it low on power? What does the tractor do when you open the throttle?

Sounds like you have plenty of compression at least, so it's not likely to be an internal engine problem.

Steve:
I"d check:
1) The flow of fuel to the carb 2) Carb settings including float setting
