A man I work with has a 504 that he is selling and I have never owned a International/Farmall before. Other than overall condition, ie tires tin, and so forth, what are specific weaknesses and strengths? It was getting oil in the radiator but no water in the oil. The cooler was replaced and he says he still has oil in water, but I dont think they flushed the system. I enjoy working on tractors, it is my hobby, but I don"t want burned. Was the 504 any good?

I have owned two a diesel and a gasser. I would take the diesel hands down over the gasser. They make great chore tractors and are great with a loader or mowing type jobs. They aren't a torque machine and plowing isn't their specialty. They don't (especially the gasser) have low rpm lug down power. The hydrolics are good and they are pretty economical to run. I liked mine a lot. Besides fixed up I think the Farmall 504 is one of the prettiest tractors of it's day.

Bill: By gosh, I have to agree with your post, in every way. When I acquired my 504, I rather liked the tractor. The down fall was that gas engine. Like you say the diesels were a good solid tractor. Maybe should have pointed out to him, 504 gas is not a sleeved engine. I can't understand why IH ever opted for leaving sleeved engines.
