I know that this has been asked many times but here goes. I have been running Champion D15Y plugs in my Farmall H. It runs ok but would I be better off with different plugs? I haven't used it much because I am slowly restoring it but hope to put a few hours of work on it this year. When we were using the Farmall H all the time we used AC C86 Commercial (I saved one from way back). Are they a good plug? I looked in the parts book and couldn't find the AC C86 commercial. Thanks!!

John
I have found that it really depends on the type of use of the tractor, If you are not going to work her and build up good heat, just about any plug will fail. Sparkplugs need too be worked good to help keep them burned off. I use AC in my 41 H and it gets medium use and they have done fine.

The most compelling argument against using Champion I've heard is that someone did a comparison test on the electrodes and found Champion's to be of the softest metal. I've also heard stories from a couple of sources where folks say the put in new Champions, tractor was still running bad, then all they did was switch to another brand and that cured their problems. Per the recommendation of Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch, I'm using 3116 Autolites in my '47 H and they've been fine year round.

Having said all that, my personal opinion is that they don't make that much of a difference. I don't think I'd change the heat range from original.

Hey John, a while back we said we'd get together when it was warmer? Warm enough for you? Maybe we could meet at the next Zagray show.

Dont quote me here, but I think it was either HOT ROD,or Popular Hot Rodding magazine that did that informal testing. They had it rated as: Champion the softest,AC next harder and Autolite the hardest. This would mean potentially the longest life without massive gap change favoring the Autolites. This explains why they arent plated yet every Champion IS.Its because without the plating, the Champions would just rust away to nothing,or else rust into the threads so bad you cant unscrew them.NGK also plates every one,but I have no idea as to their construction.I do know that the NGK Iridium plugs are supposibly longer lasting than regular platinum jobs.
In my experience,I have run about every brand but Nippondenso in my various items over the years, and have experienced bad Champions,NGKs,ACs and Autolites.Believe it or not,SplitFires seem to work very well. However,SplitFires are made by Autolite and the only difference is the welded on ground electrode...so,I dont know why I have seen an endurance difference.Unfortunately,SplitFires are not available for every engine, only popular cars and lawn mower engines.

I think we could meet at the next Zagray show. I didn't go last time because of the weather. I usually go on Saturday.

Right. When the show comes up, I'll get in touch so we can arrange a time and place to meet. Yeah, the Saturday of the last show was a bust but the Sunday had a decent turnout.

John:
You"ll get 100 different opinions on this topic. Most will say that Champion plugs are the worst... I personally use D21 Champions in my "51 H and they have yet to let me down.

John,

We used Champion D21 in all our gas tractors. Also added Sta-Bil to the gas. That seemed to be a good combination for us.
