W-30 Gurus - - question of ye......

Recently purchased a '39 W-30 with factory rubber. Tis in running condition and probably won't need to crack open the engine.

The hand brake is near useless. It is not bottoming out on its stroke, but a lot of effort on the handle yields little stopping effort. Per the manual I have, the band brake clamps on a gear within the transmission. Does this mean the brake is in the gear lube also? Is there a seal someplace that has allowed the brake to get oiled? Or were the brakes on this tractor just poor to begin with?

Much appreciate your help !

That brake runs in oil. I think you can change the band by removing the rear end cover. If your tractor has factory rubber it probably has the high speed transmission (10 mph). Those will be noted in your serial number with a p and a t. The p stands for pneumatic tires. Remember that tractor was designed with a 5mph top speed on steel. Brakes were something to lock it in place once you had the belt lined up. Even so my brake will slow my tractor and hold it in place so you may have to change bands.

heres how to adjust the brakes on your 30. The brake band on these models is an external band type which contracts on a drum mounted on the end of bull pinion shaft which extends out of left hand side of main frame, (W-30 brake drum is bolted to main drive bevel hub inside main frame). The brake is actuated by a hand lever. To adjust brake requires removal of the bull gear cover as brake mechanism is located inside main frame. Tighten the 2 nuts on the adjuster rod with hand lever in the released position until wear in the lining is taken up with no drag on the brake drum. [your tractor will just about stop by pushing in the clutch]. brake only seems good enough to hold it in place when running a belt. then i would still use a block on the wheels. hope this helps. Pg
