Bushing Source for $1.98 Each! in reply to BobOH, 06-14-2005 15:47:50
Well, you got my curiosity up, so I went hunting. Found unflanged SAE 660 bronze bushings with .750 +/-.001 ID x .875 +.002/+.003 OD x 1.000 +/- .005 length at McMaster-
Carr, in stock, for $1.98 each (plus shipping). Part number is 6381K171. They also have a grooved bushing (7965K24) for $12.48 each.

Ream to Size? in reply to BobOH, 06-14-2005 19:42:40
Wondering if they will still need to be reamed to size... The I&T manual calls for a .002" - .004" clearance. Since these bushings are .877"-.879" OD, the ID may shrink a bit when they are pressed into the rocker arms. Best to check with some platigauge. Let us know how it works out! Jeff

It is entirely possible to make new bushings. Brass is probably the best material. Just make sure you drill through the oil supply hole, and ream or bore them to fit loosely, ie .004 to .007 larger than the shaft. Some of the original bushings were babbit, and can be repoured and then bored and reamed, but replacing them with brass is much easier.

It would be possible, but unless you are going to do the machining yourself or barter, it would probably cost a lot more. The stock material cost is about $20 (leaded phosphor bronze rod - C544), but at $50/hr, the machining could be several hundred dollars for a full set. If we knew the original size there might be a less expensive generic bushing available from a company like W.M. Berg, Timken, or McMaster-Carr.

Which brings up a question - does Case/IH still have control of the original prints?

Re: B rocker arm bushing measurements in reply to Pharmall, 06-14-2005 16:19:02
I bought one bushing. OD is .875 and ID is .743 and overall length is 1 inch. The shaft on my B measured to be .747 and the book said to ream it out to get a .004 clearance. I bought one for the rocker on my B that was REAL bad (had about 1/4 of slop) but all of the others don't look real good and thought maybe this would be the time to do them all. Thanks

Just did a search on "bronze bushings". There are a bunch of companies that make standard sizes. Sounds like you would have to buy the 5/8" or 11/16" ID (as close as you can get it) x .875" OD x 1" length, get them reamed to .7470" ID, and put in the oil hole. Depending on the cost of the generic size (probably about $5 each +shipping), it would still be a close call on the machining costs, unless you know a good machinist who works for a case of beer.

W.M. Berg has pretty cheap prices on the stock bushings, they take credit cards, and have distributors nationwide (1-800-232
-2374). Might also check your local Lowes or Home Depot type store for the standard bushing. They have bronze bushings in those hundreds of little drawers where they sell the bolts and washers and such. You might get lucky on the size and quantity, but the OD will probably be made to "China specs".

That B must have had a pretty nice knock with 1/4" clearance at the rocker arm pivot point!

!!Correction!! - Bushing ID Dimension in reply to Pharmall, 06-14-2005 17:05:31
If the shaft is .747, the proper bushing ID would be .750, so a stock .750 x .875 x 1 bushing MIGHT work right off the shelf (without reaming), depending on how close they hold the tolerances.

IH does carry them, but when I priced them a couple years ago, they were $18.00 each or $144.00 for a set of 8.
