I am considering an IH 284 with woods belly mower for light duty around my woods. It would fit nicely on my existing trailer, and I've liked my IH 504. The 284 I'm looking at says made in Japan. Anyone have experience with the 284's reliability, utility, and durability?

cletus: If IH and built in Japan in the 70s or 80s, run the other way. I know 2 guys who bought them new. After waiting 6 months for parts a few times, one guy replaced his with a Super A and the other a 140.

Now if you like the 284 configuration the go for one of the older Cub versions of the same tractor. I forget the model numbers. 154 rings a bell.

Built by Komatsu '76-'84. Nissan 3-cyl. diesel or Mazda 4-cyl. gas with belt-driven governor and aluminum block and head. IMO a decent tractor until you need parts.

we had one around for some years,[ gas mazda engine] i had to install a new head gasket on it, once, napa got it overnight, [head set] didnt have any other breakdowns with it, but we ran a 5 foot brushog on it, this seemed a little big for this tractor, as i had to make a bracket and hang some ih weights on the front of it, also ours did not have live pto, so you dont want to get near the fencerows or around buildings, trees ect, that or get a overrunning clutch for it,
