Allen's Farm

Unless the sky cracks open and falls on me, it is all going to happen in 8 days when we close; the only thing we are waiting on is the lady who does the abstracting and handles the legal end. She said yesterday that she was down to the final step in the process (whatever that is?).

Don't know where to start; maybe just cleaning up around the the old place. Hasn't been lived in for lots of years and there are lots of old trees that need to be cleaned up and hauled off.

After the tenant takes off the hay and wheat, I gotta get 66 acres of alfalfa worked and planted and I want to fall plow a bunch of sod, if the moisture holds.

This thing is all coming at me like it is a preplanned scheme, somehow. Like that silly little plow last night; it just dropped outta the sky at the perfect time and at the perfect place.

Hope I'm still up for this. I've been waitin' a long, long time. :>)

I like posting the pictures here even tho I've been scolded many times for doing so. :>)

It is a lonnnnn nng way out there. The legal address is: Absolutely Nowhere, Nebraska.

But still, I can't help but wonder why I've got this burning desire to road all that equipment and tractors all that ways? Hmmmmm mmm, maybe I'm as nuts as the neighbors think?

However, betcha it is because I'll certainly see 50 mama deer with their new babies on the way. :>)

Seems awfully darned strange to me that the best friends and neighbors that I ever knew, I've never met. What's up with that anyway? :>)

He said he was coming to MD for a few days with his cousin and wives for a visit and wanted to meet me. The Sunday before Memorial Day 7 or 8 arrived here for a visit. Sure were nice people. He had just planted 700 acres of alfafa before coming to MD and had to get back to WI. I've been to several reunions with my old Army buddies. The last one was in 2000 and 2 of them died the following year. Good Luck with your farming, Hal

One thing I haven't been able to understand as I have followed your tales (maybe I missed an installment, wouldn't be the first time) is why you didn't go back to the old farm. If I understood you right, you still own that?

If I am being too nosy, just say it's a long story and I will forget about it.

Second thing is....I think we really ought to put our heads together on a date/place where we can have a "YT Mag" reunion. It sure would be great, and heck if Nebraska ain't right in the middle of the country...of course so are a lot of other places....but it would be a heck of a thing to shake a bunch of these fellas hands....I would rather meet them than any celebrity or world leader. To be perfectly honest I think that if I could lay my eyes on some of the beautiful farms some guys own, I might hardly be able to see them due to the mist in my eyes.

Let's do it. Don't have to be this year...or even next. But let's set a date and go for it. Give us all something to look forward to and plan for.

Heck no, ya ain't bein' nosey at all. 3 other farms to be exact tied up and locked in a trust.

When I went broke they were all leased out to local farmers. The tenants have been there for some 20 odd years and they are actively making their livelihood from farming using these places as part of their overall operations. Damned good men, too.

Now, I watched my dad loose two places because of landlords "wanting it back" back in the 60s. I would never, ever put another human being thru that. These men are making their living from these farms and ya just don't mess with another man's livelihood.

Since I just wanna go out, scratch around and play in the dirt; don't give a hoot if it makes money or not because we have other business interests.

So, bottom line is, since we are fortunate enough to have the means to do it and don't have to rely upon the farming game to make a living, it is just easier for us to just go pick up another farm.

Besides, we feel that farmground is a darned good investment over the long haul.

However, if these men should decide that they don't want the places, I'd sure farm 'em again, but that would have to be their choice, not mine.

PS, We've all decided to have this get-together at your house, okay? :>)

Cowman grew up in this area, so he know what he would be getting into.

I am being completely serious about this get together, I think we really should do it. If we plan it far enough in advance we can figure out a weekend when it would work for most people.

I'm 23 years out of the loop so all I can go by is my memory and what worked for me before.

I'll probably end up being the laughing stock of the county. :>)
