Out of all the manuals I have, nothing tells you how to do this. Need to do this before the front end comes off. Sure could use some help with this one if anyone knows.

You will have to jack up the tractor's front end to remove the shaft and you will need to very carefull. You cannot jack up the steering section(axle), you will have to jack up the front of the torque tube or remove the oil pan and place a solid support beam across the bottom of the engine block. Be sure to scotch off the rear wheels.

Dixieland: What do you mean, can't jack on steering axle? Damn axle has been holding front of the tractor up for 50+ years. I'm almost certain folks didn't take the oil pan off to change a tire or wheel bearing.

When we were young lads, we used to stand back on to Cubs and SA, grab them by the ty-rods and try to pick front end off ground. Most of us could lift the Cub, can't remember anyone putting daylight under front tires of SA. My point is if ty-rods will stand this surely the front axle will take it.

Just what do you mean that you cant jack up the front. You just put a jack under the pivot tube and then just jack it up. And you dont have to jack up the front to remove the steering shaft. Just how many have you tried to remove?

Dixieland, Im hardly an expert on old tractors having only worked on a few, but I own a 42 A and a 49 Super A and I never had to jack anything to remove the steering shaft on either of those tractors! Maybe your talking about something different?

Well now, on mine the steering shaft hits the floor before it exits the steering housing. Maybe I just don't know how.

Dixieland: If you just want to remove steering shaft, run the front wheels up on something about 1' high, it will clear the ground then.

However if removing front end just leave steering shaft in until front end is off tractor. Leave the wheels on, block the front pivot, you can use the steering shaft for a handle and wheel it where ever you want. Jack your tractor under the clutch housing, not the engine.

Dixieland, Im not implying you dont know what your doing, quite the contrary, I thought maybe you were talking about something else on the frontend that the tractor needed to be jacked up for. Maybe my front tires are slightly larger than yours. If what I said came out the wrong way my apoligies!

Dixieland, The brain doesnt work as good as it used to, but I am thinking that I removed that top seal in the steering box first, maybe thats the difference, in any event I wasnt trying to poke holes in your advice!

Remove the large nut on the front and the steering shaft will turn out the front.

Thanks guys, that sounds easy but I still would like to remove the shaft if possible so I can take the steering tower off and dip it as well. Any others messed with the sa steering? I have forklifts and loaders around the farm.

I did the same thing Dixieland did. I unbolted
it from engine and rolled it away. Makes it easier to reinstall too. I took mine into work and steamed it off and then had it sandblasted in there too. I took the engine in and steam cleaned
it too after getting the stuck pistons and sleeves
out. Nice to work on when clean. Hal

I left the shaft on mine and it helped to manouver the front end out of the way. Much easier to handle with steering shaft on it. After you move it just lay it back a little and it will slide right out.
