H carb rebuild

I am rebuilding the carb on my H. The kit that I have has a idle jet that is about 3/4 inch long by 1/8 inch. It has treads on one end and has a screw driver slot on the other end and a hole about .005 inch. I read in the archives, by Rebuild, that it goes by the idle screw. If you look at the bowl section of the carb with the idle screw away from you, you will see two holes to the left of it. The hole next to the idle screw is 1/4 inch with a brass tube, with a 1/16 inch hole, flush with the bottom of it. The one to the left of that is 3/16 hole with a plate in it with about .005 hole. Is the 1/4 inch the one that the jet is susposed to be in? I don"t want to start drilling if I am in the wrong place. I have two carburators, 50981DC and 45108DD, they are both the same with a tube flush with the bottom of the 1/4 inch hole. Thank you in advance, Bill

Thank you for the information. I just bought a 3/32 left hand drill and 5-40 tap. The idea is to drill and untread the broken piece, then clean the treads with the tap, but then I may just break the drill or tap in the hole. Since I have two carburators with broken jets I wonder if vibration from the engine breaks them.

You are on the right track. The brass tube (idle jet) is indeed 1/8" OD and threaded #5 NC (40 threads per inch). I had to drill and re-tap my carb because of the same problem. When you are finished, the new brass jet should nearly come up to the top of the hole. Functionally, the jet delivers fuel from the bowl past the throttle plate and is mixed with air controlled by the idle mixture screw. When you open the screw, more air mixes with the fuel to lean out the mixture. This means it works backward from your standard automotive carburetor idle adjustment.

Don't disturb the hole to the left. the idle jet is in the ¼ inch hole closet to the idle screw. On Farmall ms the idle jet sets above the casting and it is real common to find them broken off. On the H it is recessed down inside the hole. On this one one ear is brken off and as long as it is working, I ain't gonna disturb it. Sounds like mabe yours is broken off down in the hole?

Drilling is not required to rebuild the carb on your H. The IT manual has an adequate drawing of the carb (D10?) that shows the location of the jets. If the parts that you have don't match up with either carb, you might have the wrong parts.

The idle air jet, the one nearest the idle air adjuster screw is threaded. 1/8" sounds too small.
