I've got a 350 here the in-laws want to sell. There are a couple problems it has that I'd like to get some info on and pass along to them. First, it has no power steering or hydraulics all of a sudden. Noticed the power steering went out while it sat in the shed a year or so ago, and manual says if hyd's are bad, won't be any power steering. Pump gets hot if it runs awhile. The manual shows where a dipstick is supposed to be, but at some point someone has plumbed in some threaded pipe and fittings to make the reservoir easier to fill. I removed the hose that is plumbed in to the drain, and it looked like good clean fluid to me, so it isn't empty anyway.

The next big question would be about the TA. As far as I know it works. You can feel the change when you push it forward or pull it back. Now when you push in the clutch to stop with the TA forward, it stops like the brakes are dragging. It is harder than normal to get it out of gear when TA is forward also. If the TA is back, it rolls to a smooth stop and is easy to get out of gear. Any thoughts?

As far as the hyds you could have one of the levers pushed or pull which would load up the system and cause you problems. As far as the TA sound like it need to be adjusted.

The levers are all centered up. I moved each one both ways, and nothing happens. Looked in the archives and the most common problems seemed to be a missing or broken key on the shaft or air in the system. Hopefully it's one of those two problems. Thanks.

Doubtful.

If it was a broken key, the tractor would not run because the distributor is driven off the hydraulic pump. The pump wouldn't get hot, either.

If it was air in the system, the pump would not get hot.

The system is plugged up somewhere along the line. That's why the pump gets hot. It's dead-headed, and just keeps thrashing on the same oil.

Just moving the levers and centering them doesn't mean a valve isn't stuck. The linkage could be broken. All three valves should center with a little snap to them. If one just slides or flops around... That's your problem.

There's a filter screen on the side of the hydraulic "tower" (hydra-touch unit) there under the dashboard. It's right out in the open on one side or the other. Drain the hydraulic fluid and pull that screen. Betcha its plugged with all kinds of cruft.

I am having the exact same problem with our 350's hydraulics. I plan on digging into it over the 4th weekend. I will have some down time to dig into it. We have the exact same symptoms. Worked fine, went to drop the bucket after parking the tractor, and nothing. No hydraulics any longer. The bucket was stuck up. After a couple days, it dropped to the ground. I am struggling to figure out where to start. I drained the reservoir and cleaned the filter. Put new fluid back in. That is as far as I have made it. It has been metioned that the breather tube could be clogged, but have not had time to take the sheet metal off to take a look. Anyway, I will post if and when I figure out the issue. I would appreciate hearing what the cause was in this case if it is determined. Thanks

Don't forget to refill with new oil.

Reckon if I can't figure to check the filter on my own, you just may need to remind me to fill it back up after I drain it. Book says Hydra Touch or Touch Control fluid, but Hy-Tran is the thing to use now, right? I should be able to get to it this weekend, I'll let you know if that was it or not. The levers do "snap" back to center and stay there, so I'll go ahead and rule that one out. Thanks.
