I have purchased a good looking F 12 Farmall and it is almost impossible to start using the hand crank--how can I solve this problem.

I fought mine for 5 years trying to get it running right and able to start wothout pulling it off everytime I wanted to play.I spent about two hours a few weeks ago triple checking eveything, timing float level, etc. and found my float was set right, and timing was dead on but she was still flooding after three or four cranks.Took a spare needle and seat gasket I had and installed it so I have 2 on there, that was enough to stop the flooding.now for you I would suggest new plugs first,Autolite 3077s cleaned mine up nice.Pull the little cover that moves when you retard the spark and file the points a little, just enough to clean them up and recheck the gap on those. For statring this is what I do,turn the gas on,set throttle about half way,Advance the mag just above half way or even more, mines almost at the point where it would normally kill the engine, yours may vary, pull the hand crank up once or twice, maybe even three times, then push the choke in for one crank, but not anymore as they flood easy, then try her again. If you cant get it started again, them pull your plug and make sure its not covere3d with gas,but it probably will be.Go have a cup of coffee or a cold beer depending how mad it makes you, then start again! If you can pull it off and it starts most likely you have a probelm with the mag.

My F-12 was difficult to start till I tore it down for a minor overhaul. I think a big thing was replacing the gasket between the manifold and engine so I got good vacuum sucking gas to the cylinders. Starts on the 2nd or 3rd quarter turn most every time..... no choke in the summer.

I find they start fine until you decide to take it to the local car show. Then you end up with 30 people standing around watching you fiddle with it. Ended up jumping it. Mine starts very well in cool weather by setting the throttle all the way closed, no choke and no priming cranks. I find if I have the throttle open at all it'll with race up, stall and never want to start again. Cold weather takes a little bit of choke. Hot weather with heavy air, still working on it. When it's hot I'll get mine to blow puffs of white smoke but won't fire. Mine is a gas only with a gas carb, if I'm remembering correctly the manifold heat is shut off.

twelves are fickle. your timing is off. adjust the two screws in the mag till it starts on one or two cranks. may take a few times to get it right. then adjust your carb while its hot and running. pg

set the timing a tad slow and make sure you have plenty of fresh gas. Anytime you don't run them for a while the gas evaporates out of the carb and new has to be pumped up. I've heard of guys pouring gas in the fuel vent above the hood but I don't know if it realy does any good.

How long did you wait between starts? DId you ground the mag to stop or did you starve the fuel? F-12s like to vaporlock when hot. Too if you ground the mag to stop you load the carb and cylinders (plugs) with fuel, so unless it sits you are already starting with the old girl flooded. I like to starve the thing for gas to shut down, that way I know where my carb fuel is every time I start.

I guess you starve it by turning the gas off.I tried that and turned the gas back on and still couldn't get it started. Is that the way you mean ,starving it from gas?

When I shut the engine down, I turn off the gas and let it starve untill the engine dies. Now when I go to start it next time I know exactly where I am as far as gas in the carb (none). Good luck!
