I read down below the humorous haying stories, which I think Hugh won with the bale sitting on the phone wires, and it brought to mind this one of mine. It's not a haying story but definately a farm story. My uncles had a cow give birth out in the pasture. They spent all week trying to bring the calf to the barn. However, whenever they'd approach it, it would turn and run the other way. Along comes me on Sunday afternoon and listened to the situation. I just calmly said that I could get the calf to the barn for them. There were five of us there at the time and all the rest scoffed at me and said this they had to see since they had been trying all week with no success. Being shown where the calf was at, I just simply walked a mile circle around it so when I approached the calf I was coming in from the opposite direction. The calf spotted me and sure enough it jumped up and ran the opposite way -- right to the barn. The rest just stood there when I got back and shook their heads in disbelief. That was one of those rare days when common sense was working in my favor. I just thought it was comical that nobody had thought of that.

We had dairy cows at one time and one night one of the cows didn't show up at milking time. We found her toward the back of the place in a small patch of trees. There were 2 trees that forked at the bottom and were fairly large trees. The cow had walked around the fork many times but this time decided to go through and got stuck, she then laid down. It was really tough cutting one of the trees down without hurting the cow.

When I was dairy farming, I went to bring in a new calf one day. I just got to the calf and it jumped up and ran about 90 ft. and laid back down, this went on for about 4 times. The last time I just stood there and balled like a cow, the calf jumped up and ran right to me. I almost fainted.

We had a blind calf that my brother and I would walk down along the creek and feed every day. We would have to climb a tree and wait for it to wander off with it's mother or it would follow us back to the house.

Phone rang about 1:30am. It was the sherrif dispatcher asking if I had some red baldies. Yes I do. Well, they are out and a deputy is watching them. They had walked thru the electric fence. Now how to get them in. Turned on the yard light. Got a bucket of feed and opened the corral gate by the barn. About that time the deputy whooped his siren and the cows came running into the yard and right into the corral. The other cows came in thru the pasture. It was then I realized that the cows knew when the yard light came on they would get fed.
