Well after two days of debating,cussing my M,wishing I had never bought this one, I have decided to maybe sell my working M and get something in better shape.My delima is should I put another 600 or so in it,or just sell it and be done with it.Problems are as follows,GAS TANK is very dirty,but with a shut off and inline filter I have managed to get most of it out,however there is grass behind the baffle that after it sits for a while creeps out and I have to go through cleaning the junk out and I have ben doing that several times now.It will have to be boiled out but is in good solid condition.RADIATOR need replacing,just too old to fix right,Both frame rails and mounts need replacined since the radiator and thermostat housing dont line up,off by about 3/4 to 1 inch and the hosde is a paint in the butt to get on.The mounts are just too worn out OR the rails are bent,which is what Im suspecting since Irepalced the mounts with some better ones and it still doesnt line up right,not does the hole for the hand crank,OILPAN I got screwed over on,I had to repalce the one tha twas on it,and this on is bent just enough to not seal right,I have had a guy try to fix it but he couldnt get it much better than I had it.Now,it needs new tires but the ones that are on it hold air and will do for while,for me anyways,now on the plus side,fresh engine,maybe 20 hrs on it since rebuild and she runs great,when the it does run,good solid QUIET tranny,no major leaks but I think I may hve to redo the real seal,I found some oil drippings on the ground but that could have come from the shotty oil pan.So give me your HONEST opinions on what YOU would do.Shoot stright with me guys,I need it right now!

I would just park her in the back and wait until you find a strait M with a stuck motor. Then make one good one.

Concerning the radiator, if the M is like the 400 (must be close), I have found that taking loose the radiator support rod that ties back to the rear of the engine makes the top hose go on MUCH easier. I have the same misalignment you speak of, and I can take that hose off and on in 2 minutes with the rod removed. Just rock the radiator forward as far as it will go, and slam the hose on or off. You still got to bend the crap out of the hose though.

I'm probably already telling you something you already know.

John, look carefully at the bottom tank on your radiator. Does it show any sign of bulging? It it has ever had water froze in it then the rad sits too high and will not line up. You already have too much money in it but if the motor is as good as you say it might be worth it to you to go ahead and keep it. I have good clean fuel tanks, wouldn't worry about a slight oil leak, just don't park it on the carpet. Worry about the tires later, they might last a long time.

Hi , I got two lines of thought on this , 1; You know what problems you have with this one , you won't with a new-to-you one . So you're a step ahead . 2; There's always someone like me waiting to buy something to work on . What I mean by that is that if the right person knows it's problem's they might have the right parts in the back of the barn to fix it for a song so they'll take it off your hands without you losing too much in the deal . I know that after a while working on the same problems can get awfully frustrating but SOMETIMES it's cheaper to bite the bullet and just keep working on it . Ya really feel good when that problem finally goes away . IMHO ....Randy

If you decide to sell,how can you get a decent price for it with structural problems like that? Usually when that happens,one has to give it away for a song,or has to keep it and fix it best as possible.Its like selling an old car with a rusty frame.Cant get $1500-2000 with something in that situation.One either trys to have it fixed and accepts that it isnt perfect,or else they wash their hands and EBAY it for a low starting price.

paid 1300 for it,engine had just been rebuilt,I know the guy who did the work and the guy who did all the machine work on it.I had bent the oil pan bad enough t owarrant a new one so that was 50 or so,had radiator patched at 45 bucks,it was and is in bad shape.Rebuilt the water pump,new bearings and a new pulley,new belts come in at around 100,replaced gas tank which had rusted through in a couple of spots wiuth the one that has the grass behind the baffle,another 100 or so.Rewired it and put on an unused alt I had so that comes in to play at about 50,bought as couple of the rubber motor mounts from someone on here,I think for 40,didnt solve the engine tilting foward but I think the steel ones will fix that but not sure what else is bent so dont know if tha twill help or not.Now if I fix all the probelms,Ill come in at about 2500 total before its all said and done.I dont see being able to get my money back out of it,so Im tossed up on selling it or fixing it.

You will have to sell it to someone for 1800 to get what you got in, out. You'll have to cover up knowing it has a bad rad and possibly bent rails to get anything for it. Don't know. Sounds like a long shot. If you don't get frustrated working on it you can prolly have a nice running tractor with $2500 invested all said. I don't know. I can see your points also. The rails changeover is just a lot of work. Whatever you buy will have it's issues though. You do have a good motor and you've done quite a few other things, you can get that tank cleaned. This is a tough call.

My 300U was $1500 plus all the things I have bought for it...I would never get my money back out of it....but...its worth more than that to me.I consider myself "caretaker" for somthing that will outlive me....I am just doing my part to keep it alive and well....

Been there done that John, and there comes a time when you just plain get sick of a machine fighting you at every turn. Sometimes it is easier to cut your losses and start over, at least with different problems. Sounds like the frame and mountings might be a real headache. The tank can be cleaned or replaced, but when a person gets into the structural end of things, sometimes they go south in a hurry. Hard to tell another person what to do with his equipment, but if it were me, and having gone through what you have, I'd either part it out, or sell it outright and start over. 1500 to 18oo and you can have a good running M and no headaches. Ive got two right now that I do all my farming with, feeding hay, mowing, haying, etc., and they are hard to beat. Hope this gives you some insight, and good luck, Harley

THINK ABOUT IT THIS WAY. IF YOU SELL IT ALL IN ONE PIECE, SOMEONES GOING TO FIX IT. WITH THE NEW ENGINE, YOU HAVE HALF THR BATTLE WON. IF THESE OLD TRACTORS WERE EASY TO FIX, EVERYONE WOULD BE DOING IT. JUST BACK OFF FOR A WHILE, THEN GET BACK ON , ONE THING AT A TIME.I LOVE THE OLD "M",S.SO I THINK THEY,RE WORTH SAVING. WHEN YOU GET FINISHED, I YHINK YOU WILL PROBABLY LOOK BACK AT THE PROBLEMS AS JUST A SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD.JUST MY TWO CENTS WORTH. GOOD LUCK. FRANK
