Say,

What would make one of two 12 volt batteries wired in parallel boil on my 686?

One boils over and the other one doesn't. Last time I checked with a VOM, the voltage was at 16 volts, but that was clear last fall sometime.

Could one battery be "bad" and throwing a demand on the system? Or is it still just a plain old-fashioned bad regulator?

Allan

16 volts is too high. Ideally, you don't want to go above 14.5 volts - and 14.0 is even better. I would never go above 15 volts. I agree with the others. It appears that your regulator is stuck.

Hi Allan, Sounds like a regulator problem to over charge. The military uses 6 to 8 (12 volt) batteries hooked up in series/parallel to get the 24 volts and we never had a problem with overcharging. I would check those battery cells to see what they read. Hal

PS: I hope you get some rain so you can plow. It
is so dry here I don't think I could get the plow to stay in the ground. I'm using my rinse water from the washer to water the garden.

Allen, how well do the 2 12's in parallel turn the 686 over? My 544D has 2 6's in series and if turns over sooo slow. I was wondering if it would be better just to install 2 decent size 12's in parallel to have her crank faster. Your thoughts?

Had the same thing happen to a pair of deep cycle 12V batteries that I use for an electric trolling motor. Forgot that they were on the charger. One boiled over and was very warm to the touch, the other was fine. They were purchased at the same time, and have always been used and charged in parallel.

Allan,

Can't help with the electrical problem but was wondering if you were able to get your Char-Lynn power steering to stop leaking?

Bob
