Hello,

I am new to this forum and to the use and purchasing of tractors. I recently bought 7 acres and built our home. We are going to be mowing about 5 open acres. I was planning on buying a pull behind mower to use with my quad, but after borrowing my dad's and seeing how fast the feild grows, I now have talked my wife into getting a small tractor with a bush hog and/or finish mower to do this job. I am looking at three tractors right now and need a little help.

All three prices include a bush hog...

The tractors are

Ford 8N....Looks to be in fairly good shape. But I seem to see oil around the motor when veiwed from the right side of the tractor. Asking $2300

Farmall A...Decent shape, but I know that he sheetmetal needs paint, leaks a little oil from the rear of the tractor, doesn't want to start right now. THis was my Grandpa's tractor (not the original owner)and my uncle who owns it no says that it has sat for a while and needs a battery and maybe a started(he will replace and get it running again) Price is $1800 (Uncle says that is reletive price, he would ask more if he was selling it to someone else)

Co-Op E3...I haven't seen this one, but it is a friend of my uncle's and he says it is in good working order. Price is $1500

I know that the Ford and the E3 have 3 Point Hitches and the Model A does not... Is this a big deal for bush hogging?

I also know that the E3 has a live PTO, Didn't ask about the 8N or the A...

I don't need a collector, I just want one that will do my light duty jobs of mowing the 5 acres/ Blading and Grading the driveway. Are these prices fair? What about parts/service...which would be easiest to work on or get someone to work on?

ANy help you all can give me would be great! You can email me or respond in th forum...

Thanks again...

i would investigate and see what kind of demand there is for hay in your area. might be worth it to sow the 5 acres in a good quality hay the sell the bales. eventually the hay should pay for the equipment

Okay, well, neither the 8N or Farmall A has a Live P.T.O. The 3-point on the 8N and E-3 would probably make finding other implements easier, but pull-behind equipment is available. If the E-3 is a good runner, it might be a better choice because of the 3-point and the live P.t.o.

Good luck!

Jay,

Sorry, I must be completely dumb! What is the CA? I'm figuring the AC is Allis Chalmbers, but the CA is throwing me...A good mowing machine is really all I am loking for, and 1000 bucks is even better! Thanks!

A CA is model style it is a small tractor with 3 point and it has a hand clutch that lets you disengage the final drive. They are a nice machine too mow with.

Jeff, I have several old JD and IH tractors, but if I were given the choice I'd go for the Co-op. It was made by Oliver so parts other than sheet metal won't be hard to come by, it has more power than either of the others, it will handle easy, good fuel economy, and as a plus you could add power steering without a great deal of money or effort.

Don't know anything about a co-op, but 3 Point Hitch is the by far the best, a pull behind is a pain going around corners, also the hydraulic pump being run by the PTO on the ford isn't to handy either!

I know this is the Farmall board, but I'd take the ford any day over the Farmall. You can't compare a tractor without a 3-point for one you can use with modern implements. I have a BN that I love (a narrow front end version of an A), but it excells at pulling a wagon. If Iever could find an implement for it, it might be usefull, but no hydraulics limits it as well. Sentimental doesn't cut it when you got work to do.

My real workhorse is a Ford 2N which is an earlier versin of an 8N. I brush hog (pulls a 5 footer all day in second), mow (6 foot finish mower) post hole digs (live hydraulics would be nice, but not neccesary), Plows (6 foot back blade and chains all you need for upstate NY winters). I am not sure if Farmall has anything to compete with an N series Ford. The Letter series like H's and M's are a little big. the 140 and 240 would be the closest, but the 3-point conversion brings them in the price of a Ford.

The reason all them "yuppies" have N's (actually they all have Kubotas, is couse they are a good tractor.

By the way, I really love Farmalls, but just for farming.

Take Care
Steve

I would get the Co-op E3. Especially if it has a 3 pt hitch and live pto. They are a really nice little tractor. Otherwise, I would look at the Farmall A for sentimental reasons.

AN E3 with hydraulic and three point hitch is by far the pick of that group. It has live pto, with creeper gears it has 8 speeds. They are an easy starting quiet running engine. We have always had a Cockshutt 30 (the same thing) around. Most of them are not pretty to look at because people have been too busy working them.

Is it just me, or does anybody else think this fella should keep shopping? None of those machines sound like a good deal or a good fit.

Or remind his uncle that he wasn"t born yesterday?

I would think that one could do much better for around $2000.

Just my .02.

The A has a PTO, but no 3pt hitch and no hydraulics. Hydraulics are not even an option on a plain old A. Some people have cobbed on an old power steering pump and driven it off the crankshaft pulley for hydraulics, but unless you have metal fabrication skills and the tools to do it right, I would not recommend it. Cob-jobs usually are more trouble than they're worth, with belts flying off at the worst times and junk. Plus they just look bad. Never seen someone do a power steering pump on an A yet that didn't look like it was held on with 2x4s, duct tape, and chewing gum...

So... Anything on an A will be hand lift. You'd need a small, and I mean SMALL, tow-behind bush hog.

Plus, $1800 seems awful steep for just a plain old A. You could probably get a Super A, C, or Super C, all of which have hydraulics and a belly lift, for the same or less. Your uncle is crazy if he thinks he can get MORE out of a non-relative. $1800 is an A in top running condition with a nice paint job.

I agree on going with the Grandpa tractor. That's got more value to my sentiments than any other. This is just an isolated case but a friend of mine bushhogs with an 8N and, having problems with his hydraulics, was commenting on it being an involved job to get in there and fix it. Unless you're really lucky, whatever tractor you get at those prices is going to require some work so you might as well put it in on something that's a part of your family history.

On the other hand, a live PTO will probably make a noticiable difference in how easily you get your bushhogging done.

I guess it boils down to how much value you place on the fact that the A was your grandfather's and weather your owning it will keep it in the family.

They all will do your jobs, The Co-op sounds interesting. I would take my grandpas tractor before all others but that is just me. You will enjoy it more and you could put a 3 point on it if needed. N model fords are made to paint and sell to yuppies, however they have all parts redially available and are easy to maintain.

I would go with the A. I have mowed with a farmall cub with a belly mount brushhog and kubota that is only a few years old. I hate using the three point because it is more of a pain too hook up than the one for the cub was. A belly mower is better to mow with becuase you can get in places with.
