I am trying to get the transmission gears out of a derilict MD and got stuck with the clutch shaft. The engine is stuck. Can I get to all of the bolts on the pressure plate from the inside of the bell housing? The tractor is not in an area where I can split it easily or safely.

How long would it take to cut the clutch shaft with a hacksaw?

JG

Wouldn't it be easier to tow the tractor to an area where you can split the tractor? Hal

The tractor is in a scrap yard, sandwiched between two F-12's. One axle is broke off, and the other removed. Right now, it is leaning over at an angle (because of the broken axle) on a rocky/gravel hill side. I really don't want to go through the trouble of trying to move it out, and then find something to block it up with. So, splitting is not an easy option right now.

If all is said and done, I guess I could take a sledge hammer to the bell housing and let it fall apart where it is. I really hate destroying good parts though.

You should be able to get the clutch out without splitting the tractor. Belly pump if there has to be dropped out. You should be able to rotate the shaft enough to get all the bolts out if you can put the transmission in neutral and disengage the clutch. There are I think 6 bolts holding the clutch plate to the flywheel. Take out everyother one and transfer them to the three open holes you will see. this compresses the clutch springs and releases the clutch. Cross shaft that holds the fork has to come out too. It's clamped to the cross shaft, but there is also a thick washer that serves to key the fork to the shaft. Also you will have to take the main drive shaft coupling loose that is in front of the transmission. Once you get all that, the clutch shoulc come out unless I left out something which should be obvious once you are under there. Get ready for a dirty job and some choice words!!!! However, I think what I described will he a lot easier than cutting the clutch shaft with a hacksaw.

My actual problem is in getting to the top bolts on the pressure plate. The engine won't turn, so I can not rotate the flywheel to get the bolts to the lower part. Is there enough room to get a socket or wrench up into the top portion of the bell housing? If not, and I just can not get the shaft out, then I may have to cut it.

It's been a while since I was into one of these. I'm not sure if there would be enough room to get to the bolts or not. I think it would be worth a try to remove the cross shaft and the clutch fork to see if you can do it. Pretty tight up in there to get to the bolts on the clamp of the clutch fork. Have you gotten the bolts out of the coupling on the main drive shaft??

I have the main drive coupling out, along with the bolts for the throw out bearing support bracket and the bolts that hold the disengagement fork onto the clutch release shaft. I have not pulled the clutch release shaft out, but that should just entail removing the two washers and yanking the shaft out the side. I was able to get everything loose up in there and I can rotate the release fork up and out of the way.

I am guessing that the pressure plate and clutch disk must be angled downward to allow the clutch shaft to be pulled out past the pinion drive. I have the pinion bearing cage loose, but it does not have enough room to slide forward far enough to clear the clutch shaft. So, I am back to trying to get the pressure plate loose.

Yes, you have to get the pressure plate loose and then the shaft has to be angled down to pull it out. With the coupling out, you should be able to pull the shaft back far enough to get it out of the pilot bearing. You need to get the cross shaft out, because things are then much easier. It's possible to get them out with the cross shaft in there, as I did it, but I could not get them to go back in until the cross shaft was out. Not a big deal to pull that cross shaft out.

Thanks. I will give it a try this Saturday, if they are open.
