My question is can you not incorporate the 4 position switch in this system and just use a normal switch for my lites. Or does this switch have some effect on the cut out working properly, as there is no voltage regulator. I have seen a diagram with out the four position switch but It had a magneto system. Mine is a coil system. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The 4 position switch does the same function whether it's a mag or battery ignition. The four positions are high and low charge, and high and low (dim and dimmer) lights. High and low charge simply grounds the generator field coil for high charge and puts a resistor in the circuit for low charge. High and low lights puts full voltage to the lights on high and a resistor in the light circuit for low lights. When the lights are on the generator is on high charge. If you still have a cutout relay, I suggest you replace it with a voltage regulator. You will have a lot less battery problems. You can get a voltage regulator that mounts on the generator just like the cutout. If you change to the regulator, the high/low charge switch for the generator will have no function, but you can leave it there, just not connected. No one will know the difference except you.

I have the battery ignition and need to know if I can take the four position switch out of the equation all together. Will it still charge the battery with out the four pos. switch And if so anm I suppose to run a jumper on the two f's on the generator. Help

If you put a voltage regulator on, you won't need to use the 4 position switch. If you have lights, just a separate switch will work for that. If you keep the cutout relay and don't have the 4 postion switch, you would just ground the wire that goes to the switch from the generator. However, if you do that, it will put the generator on full charge all the time and if you run the tractor much, you will have trouble with the battery overcharging. I forget the exact hookup, but as Cue says, take a look at the diagrams.

Try this link:>Link
Or>Link do a search in the forum on Wiring diagrams and you'll come across Bob Mellville's name - he has a website with all wiring configurations for IH tractors. Hope this helps.
