Whooooeeee!

Spent every spare minute this morning tightening, adjusting, checking gear boxes, greasing, oilin' chains and adjusting some more.

Wouldn't ya know, it took me three rounds to learn how to run the crazy thing.

Then, just a wee bit to drop 4 acres of hay with that 686D and the NH 495 swather. Love the sound of that red tractor bellerin' and it just plain feels good to be back amongst the living again!

Think I'll cut another 6 acre patch tomorrow just outta spite. :>)

Well Allan it sounds like you are getting the hang of the 495, are you cutting those square corners now?

Hi Jimmy,

Well, the first three rounds were just a bad hair day all the way around. Took me awhile to not to "drive it like a mower".

Out of old habit from running the old John Deere #8 mower, I kept wanting to put that right tractor tire up against the crop instead of keepin' the tractor over to the left and straddling the prior windrow.

After that lesson finally sunk in tho, it went smooth as silk. I'm still kinda amazed at the way those things gobble the hay. They sure weren't designed for small fields were they? :>)

By the way, thanks for the tip about that grease zerk at the tongue pivot. Greasin' that guy up made all the difference in the world in gettin' the machine set up right.

Allan you old coger, I'll bet the wolves and coyotes are having a meeting in your township tonight about how to mess up the new guy out here on the plains! Just wait till you start up in the morning, they will send out a pup dragging a leg and tears will come to your eyes and you won't be able to see where to turn that new gadget. On second thought, maybe you should take a weapon of some kind in addition to the camera. Many of us are plain jealous of your progress down the pipe dream. Later. Yea, I'm back among the living sort of. Migraine

Hey Guy,

Been thinkin' bout you the past several days and was wonderin' how you were getting along. Hope all is well in your world, now?

Yep, this is all still "sinking in" to us. The wife is absolutely beside herself; wants to move out there "right now". The old house just is not livable, but she is a determined cuss, so it just might happen, dunno. Says she is gonna paint it this weekend.

To me, the sound of that old tractor is my anchor and the common thread between my past and my present. Those old red devils sure have a calming effect on us, heh? :>)

If I'da known you were out cutting hay today, I would have had you come and cut down the stuff I had to cut today. It was a field of marsh hay that hasn't been cut in 4 years and was over 6' tall- made the biggest windrows you ever did see, even laid out flat! Awfully hard on the old IH 1490 MoCo.
Allan, have you been getting all that rain that I've been hearing about on your new ranch? We sure could use some.
I'm also curious what you used to cut hay "back in the day" if the NH machine is new to you. I guess I figured that everyone has cut with a haybine before.

Hi Paul,

Never owned or operated any kind of a swather.

I hired the hay dropped by the custom boys 'cause I was too darned busy irrigating (the old fashioned way with tubes, dams and a derned irrigation shovel.) :>(

This dry land stuff is a bloody "walk in the park" compared to that. :>)

Yes, I can't remember getting these kinds of rains out here. The pastures are up to the cows shoulders and the calves are in there somewhere; see a little head once in a while.

Forgot to take the camera along, wouldn't ya know. I was so darned hyped up to get that swather in the field, didn't even think about it.

I'll try to remember in the morning when I sneak away from Mama to go out and play in the grass.

Also, that darned old $500 baler better work or else I might be buying a pitchfork and another pair of gloves! :>)

Sure hope that Hoyt Clagwell has live power, Allen needs that live power to be productive. LOL
Allen, I just got a line on a IH Mower conditioner, Think its a 1490? Has two sickles, book, and always shedded. It looks good, rollers are in great shape. Is it worth 500? Does anyone know how much HP it takes to run it?
Thanks,
Van

Hi Van,
I have a 1490 IH. I like it, it's a great machine. It's a 12' swing frame MoCo. I pull it with a JD 4010 (85 hp) and the fellow before me pulled it with a 656 (65ish hp?) You wouldn't want much less than that. It's worth $500, but if it needs a new sickle and guards it'll be $500 more. Last year I had to replace the hydraulic motor and that was $600+ and a month of downtime. I would still get one again though.

Van, we pulled a 9 ft. New Holland for years with an H( 29hp ) and 330U ( 35hp ) 3rd gear. Pulled them later with 400D, 460D and Super M ( all 50 hp plus ) still 3rd Gear. Live PTO is a plus, but not a must.

Thanks guys, I have a 300, a SMTA, and a 3020 all with live power. I think the 300 will be a little light and will try the others out on it. Its a 9' mower, I think he made a sale.

Thought you might injoy this picture of my dad cutting hay with a IH 990 9 foot haybine on June of 1974. This was my dad's favorite jobs. We had a 856 but he always used the 300. Dad had put 350 IH Firecreator pistons in it, added the wide front end and power steering. We repainted it to look like a 350 which it basically was. In the 1980's he traded the 990 for a 1190. That 300 cut a lot of hay!

Thanks for the great photo Ken! Your dad and the dog both look happy. I have both of my dads 300"s and love them more than should be natural for a tractor. I guess its the memories the machines bring. They only do light duty now, but i still work them.
