Hello,
I have a International 2424 that will only stay running with the starter button pressed. It's like when the starter button isn't pressed it is cutting the power to the coil. This just started happening. Is there some relay that could have gone bad? Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?
Paul

Sounds like you have a defective ballast resistor.

Correct. Your resistor (white porcelan looking doo-hickey next to the coil) is burned out. Local auto parts store will have what you need, usually about 6 or 7 dollars if I remember correctly. Good luck,

Bill

I'm not sure how your 2424 is wired however on most early GM Delco systems the extra terminal on the starter soliniod terminal "I" sent 12 volts to the coil only when starting or turning the switch to srart. The points normally run on 6 volts and the extra power helps cold start up.
You should have a regular power sorce to the coil for run position and it may be a resister wire or go to a resister block. Most times I've seen the wire or block go bad or it may hve just come off if it just happened. I normally take a test lite to the positive side of the coil and should lite up in both on and start.

Sounds like you have a wire crossed on your starter solinoid. One of the small terminals is only energized when starting and the other is always energized when the key switch is in the "ON" position. Some solinoids are marked with "S" and "I". Make sure the coil is connected to the "I" terminal

Delco solenoid markings:

"S" = Start (wire from starter switch or button)

"R" = Resistor (wire to coil side of ignition resistor)

FORD solenoid markings:

"S" = (wire from starter switch or button)

"I" = Ignition (wire to coil side of ignition resistor)

How would the wires cross themselves while the tractor was running? This happened while the tractor was being used.

Paul,

Look at the post below for 656 gas not running. I think you have the same problem.

Turn the key to the "run" position, and use a multimeter to check the power to the coil. You should be able to touch the + side and anywhere on the frame, and read 12 Volts.

If you don't then follow the wire back to its source. Most likely you will find your problem somewhere along the line, or at the source itself.

Should only get 6 to 6 1/2 volts with the key in the run position unless it has no resister and a internally resisted coil.
