Super A running rough

Been doing a little hair pulling today. Lately the old SA has been running so rough it won't even move itself without dying. Other times, it seems to run fine for hours mowing. Today, it wanted to run badly on two or three cylinders. At the same time this was going on, I noticed a cold spot and condensation just below the mouth of the carb. Is this a clue of some sort? I'm think it might need a carb kit this time. (I've changed plugs, cap & rotor, mag condenser, & points, & timed it, adjusted the valves, It helped a little, but still not running smoothly)

Yesterday I got a carb kit for my Zenith at the Case-IH dealer. I took it off, and tore it all apart. One of the jets, maybe the main, which has about 6 holes in it was partially clogged with what looked like June bug parts. I cleaned all that up, put in all the new parts & gaskets, replaced the rubber boot from carb to air cleaner, and fired it up. I think it helped quite a bit, but still get a miss once in a while. Might try new plug wires next or get rid of the new Champion plugs & try AC's or Autolites. I'm getting there & it seems to run quite a bit better, but still needs something.

ddg: I don't think this is your problem, but then one never knows they may not all act the same. Few years back my Super would stop if it hit a bump, or a sudden jolt. With my tractor there was no missing, and it would always fire right up again. Turned out to be wear in the distributor shaft. This was causing a dead short in the points.

Another problem I had leading up to the distributor shaft rebuild, I went through an excessive number of rotors and caps. Seemed like no time until terminals were badly beaten in cap as well as rotor. Cap would usually have a crack as well, allowing in moisture. It's about 10 years now, and I haven't replaced a cap or rotor since.

Having said this, I'd still have to go with carb problems on your tractor, having read all this discussion. I just threw in the shaft item so as not to overlook anything.

Have you checked that the centrifugal advance weights look ok? Springs, dirt, pivot holes not elongated, freely moving, etc.

The condensation is simply an indication of high humidity.

The carburetor is cool, after the venturi, due to the change in the speed of the air flow, plus the heat needed to evaporate the gasoline into the mixture.

Since that area is naturally cool, humidity in the air condenses there when conditions are favorable.

Actually the condensation is at the top of the carb where it bolts to the manifold, I"ve never noticed it before. The tractor just had an engine overhaul this winter, and now it either runs great, or hardly at all, I"ve cleaned out the tank & always start my pre-flight inspection by looking at the sediment bowl. Yesterday, I took the magnito apart, put in new points, condencer, cap & rotor,& new plugs. Then I timed it, and found it has a good strong spark. All that helped out, but still runs a little rough at idle, & when under power. About all I can do is take the carb apart look at float level & jets. I had this happen a few years ago, and found a mud dobber nest in the air intake tube below the pre-cleaner, but it"s all clear this time.

I would check the compression on all cylinders and compare the readings. Should be close to one another. How does the fire to the plugs look when you hold a plug wire just a short distance from the plug and see if the firing is weak. Could be a weak coil if the fire isn't nice and blue.

You may want to set those valves at .017 cold and see if that helps. Could be a little tight on the clearance when hot. Hal
