Hey Guys,

Sorry to drag this over on the Farmall board, but since this is where you guys hang out, thought I'd catch ya here.

On the New Holland 495 mower.

It just does not "carry" right and I'm trying to find the culprit.

Okay, I find that I need to put fluid back in that left rear tire to give it anchor, but that's not the big problem.

In trying to adjust that header "float", I can easily get the right side to balance out and float, but the left side has a broken 'inner' lift spring.

How much of a nightmare is that gonna be to change out this winter? Will those end "plugs" just 'unscrew' from the springs once I get it pulled up outta there?

What's the repair proceedure?

Thanks,

Allan

Allan: My thoughts would be the outer spring is probably not much good either. I never broke one, just found the tension goes out of the springs. When I replaced them, I replaced all, and as Paul said, nip the spring with torch.

Hey Allan, I was lucky I have never had that problem. Go to the open forum and ask Steve From New Holland on the Implement Board.

Hello Allan
I don't have experience on the New Holland, but I've changed out the exact same setup on something else. When you try to unscrew the plug, the spring just grabs the plug tighter. You need to just take your acetylene torch and cut through the coils of the spring on both sides of the plug. With even just a little bit of care you won't even nick the plug. Then the plug just screws into the new spring, maybe with a bit of grease. The spring will tend to "open" when screwing it in, the opposite of unscrewing it. It's really quite an easy job once you know what I just told you. Don't wait until winter- it's warmer now! :>)

Hi Paul,

Are you telling me that it is next to impossible to save that good outer spring?

It's got two springs, one inside the other and it is the inner one that has broken in half.

Thanks,

Allan

I didn't realize that both springs are mounted on the one plug. I'm going to say that it would be pretty hard to get that spring off unless you can think of some way to turn the spring coil off from the butt end of the coil, as opposed to unscrewing the plug. You might just add 6 months to your life by avoiding the frustration and just get a new spring, torching the old one off.

Paul: Good thinking, it's just not worth the time trying to save the large spring. My thoughts were and still are tension had gone out of large spring, thus small spring was taking too much of the load, causing it to break. Allan, I think you will find both springs are the cheap fix. Don't want to break another small spring, especially the new one.

Allan;

Dont your owners manual for the mower explain how to do what ever you want to do?

And while we are on the subject please keep your gates and tool box lids shut. The sugar beet aphids or whatever they are called are wrecking the chile crop down here.
