There is a IH 1456 that is going to be coming up for auction on August in our area. My question is the 1456 a pretty solid tractor because I hope to use the tractor mowing with a JD 930 12' rotary conditioner and possibly no-till drilling. Thanks

A 1456 was possibly the finest tractor IH made, IMHO. They will make 15-20,000 hours if given even a little care. They are one of the most durable engines out there. You won't have to much trouble finding people in that 15-20,000 club. I just overhauled a 407, and it didn't cost anymore than the 1066 and will probably last twice as long. The camshafts are hard to come by, and the cranks and blocks are too, so it could get a little pricey in that respect. The 400 series engine that came after them can deliver more power, but you shouldn't have any trouble getting 180 or 190 out of that 407, if thats what you need. The weak point would be the shift, as with all 06-66 series Internationals. Unless well taken care of, it might need some attention to take play out in various places. But their reputation for being a tough, dependable workhorse is long-lived and well deserved.

I personally think they are getting to be one of the more desirable IHs. They sell all over the place. You might see a straight one sell for $5500 at an auction, and someone may ask and get over $10000 for one in similar condition privately. They are a little hard to come by. The people that had them, loved them, and now there seems to be quite a few wanting to buy them back. Good Luck!

We have a 1256 that has 8100 hours on it with nothing more than routine maintenance (and a few clutches - because of loader work).

Engine and transmission are solid items on these tractors. The TA is good as well if it was used properly - ours wasn't and has been out for about 4 years now.

As far as I am concerned, loader work in a cattle operation has to be the most abuse that any tractor could ever see - our 1256 has held up longer than any previous tractor with less maintenance!

If it is below freezing, these older diesels should just be plugged in so they start - saves wear and tear on pretty much everything...

They usually run 10K + hours before needing much if taken care of. Ours has 7500 and has only had the TA and timing gears done. The only downside is that they are expensive when it's time to overhaul, and they don't start as well in cold wheather.
