small venturi in 460 carb

I had the carb apart on my F460 today and noticed that it has a very small diameter venturi, marked with the number 23. If my memory serves me correctly they usually have one that's marked 30 something. What gives?

You are right, someone has replaced the venturi. The "23" venturi are for Super H's and rarely I've found them in 300/350"s which are normally "25"'s The 460's I rebuilt almost always have the double wall venturi. This can be replaced with "27" by the book. The "30" which you remarked on is not found till you get to the C-291/C-301 engines normally

Any idea on why it was changed? An old IH mechanic told me they used to change them so the old tractors weren't so cold blooded in the winter or something to that effect. Should I try and find a 27 or just leave it as is.

I'm not sure why, probably to allow a refined fuel/air mix. Personally I always put the same venturi back in. I only switched to the 27's when the old double's were broke. The customers would much rather have an original stock. I've heard both ways as far as how the engine runs. Some swear by it some don't. I will, however say that the 460/560 carbs I had a horrible time keeping in stock due to 6 out of 10 having cracks in the bowl along the side. My guess is too much engine vibration. Make sure to check yours!
