I"m looking to buy a 1950 Farmall M with and X-9 after the serial #. That stands for "high speed gears". I have a 1948 M parts tractor with x1G which stands for high speed gears, low speed gears. This means low 1st gear and high 4th gear. The high speed M is unusable with these high gears. I plan to do a little farming with it.
Are these interchangable and how hard is this?
Thanks

The only gear that will be different in the 2 tractors will be first. High speed gears applys to fourth only low speed gears applys to first gear only. At least this is the way i understand it.

You will have to pull the tranny top and drop the clutch, pull both shafts and swap both gears on EACH shaft.,would probably easier just to drop down to third and live with it.One of my Ms has just the high 4th and its too fast for me as well so I just use 3rd.

Joe,
I have an M with x3 in the serial number and have a simular problem with too high a ground speed to effectively swath my hay. I am interested to know what you find out about this problem. I was a little confused was your 1st gear really slow?
