TD-18 and general info in IH crawlers

Me and my dad have the oppertunity to lay our hands on three TD 18's that do not run. Being mainly Caterpillar fans, we don't have much knowage of the IH crawlers, other then they start on gas and switch over to diesel.

Some of the questions I have would be
I am wondering where the heck the serial numbers would be on these guys. I spotted a stamped serial on the engine block. would there be any other locations of the serial (I understand the older ones have a plate on the dash, and that leads to question #2)

From what I understand, the TD 18 was redisigned in the 1950's (Right?) and I believe two of the bulldozers in question are of the later generation. Can the two generations swap parts?

Finally, how different is the International's final drive compared to Caterpillar's of the same era?

I forgot to scribble down what I thought were serial numbers (The ones on the engine blocks) So i'll post them when I look at them tomarrow. I do know two of them have the TD18M prefix, while the other is TDRM.

Thanks for any replys,

Chris

Your needing to jump over to Red Power. There are fellas there that will help you along with most of what you need. As an aside, I've driven IHC and Cats all my younger life and while the Cats are a great working tractor (as are the IHC's excluding the TD-24 and early TD-15's)the IHC crawlers look like no other and are a trac-mans idea of what a track-layer should look like.Good luck, and they will want pictures....lots of pictures!!!

Please explain why you think TD24's are NG. I have a late one with a Cummins engine I am fixing up and would like to know your reasoning. I have been told the finals are the weak link, anything else?

I've never driven a TD 24 but I'd love too. It's a common story that the thing set IHC's large crawler business (industrial & aggriculture) back if not dealing the death blow. Yes it's the final drive. Having said that I have an aquaintance with three TD 24's. Three complete tractors. He uses one commercially to rip ground (not a dozer tractor and that is key) and the others are for parts. The key is pulling straight when under load. I have stood 30 feet from the TD 24 when he is pulling 3 48" shanks and the ground shakes. The tractor is an awsome spectical under load and sounds incredible. He hasn't needed the parts tractors yet. I admire the things (TD 24's) as would anyone who sees one upfront and running, especialy under load. There are few runners around as I understand it so they are an awsome item to collect.
The early TD 15(I have many hours on one) were so noisey (the tracks) that we had to where ear protection because of the high pitched squeaking. IHC could do nothing about the squeaking. As I understand it the next version TD15 B? had improvements that helped quite down the tracks.
