Depending on the source of the whine, it COULD be very serious. There isn't enough clearance between the bull gear and the case for bearing parts when they fail completely. The result in a big hole punched in the case. Don't let it get that far!

H's can do the same thing. I junked one with that problem.

Mopar,

I'd give it some cheese to go with the whine. :>)

Seriously, I agree with Rusty that I would check the rear end to make sure it is full. If it has gear oil (not hy-tran) the water will separate out of it and can be drained by loosening the plug located at the rear of the housing below the PTO until the water starts to drip out. After the water is out tighten the plug and then check the level on the plug on the clutch side of the housing just behind the clutch pedal.

If the whine persists after that it might be a bearing(s) or bull/bull pinion gears that have some pits in them. Unless you are pulling a plow for days on end, or the noise gets worse quickly, that rear end will probably out last you. If it “clunks” then you need to investigate further.

It's probably nothing to be too concerned about, when the tractor was new it would have been very quiet, but as the hours accumulated and the tractor got older things began to wear and now there is a whine. Without the benefit of being able to hear the noise myself I really can't tell you if it is serious or not. You can spend some really big dollars to get rid of the whine or just live with it. Depending on how the tractor will be used it could be many years before it gets bad enough that it has to fixed.
As a precaution you may want to drain and replace the fluid in the trans/ rearend, and make sure it is full.

i don't know about the M's but alot of super A's, 100's, 140's and cubs have whining noises in reverse and alot of other gears, some have been this way for 30 years, mainly just wear on the tranny, make sure you have fluid in there and i wouldn't worry about it at all.

C's H's and M's are very quite when new, each gear has it's own sound, though.
