My dad has been working on his F-12"s fuel pump. He just bought a rebuild gasket kit for it. Tonight we were pulling it to start it and it will only pump fuel about halfway to the carb. Any suggestions on what may be wrong? I know that there is another rebuild kit that includes a spring, at least that is what the guy told me when I ordered the gasket set for my dad. I myself do not know much about the farmalls, so I am not much help, but hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on the subject.
Thank You

I just experienced the exact same problems! Interesting. I just today got it fixed to where I can hand crank it and start it on the second click of the mag. I agree with everybody elses comments. I even went so far as to temporarily replace the existing fuel lines with some clear plastic tubing to observe the fuel flow. Make sure your bypass chamber has a plug installed in the top of it. It is not a pipe thread! Next, make sure it is open. I removed it, plugged the large return line with my thumb, blew into the bottom of the tee to make sure it was open. Then I moved my thumb to the outlet of the tee (going to the carb) and blew through it. After reinstalling all of the lines, make sure they are tight, hand crank with the mag off, until you get fuel to the carb. Somebody else already mentioned to make sure your float is set correctly. I rebuilt my fuel pump using a kit from Rice Equip and it came with new valves, diaphram, and springs. I ordered a new push rod also but, found it to be about 1/8" shorter than the orginal. I reused the orginal. Another thing I found is the gasket for the inlet screen to the carb was leaking real bad. This allowed fuel to drain back to the bypass chamber and air to enter the fuel system making for hard starting.
Of all days to work on the old girl, it hit 101 degrees today! But it was worth it to to get her started. If you want any more specific help my EMail is open. Good Luck.

The fuel pumps, and the push rod to run it, was a pain on F-12s and F-14 even in the 1930"s and 1940"s when people were farming with them. It was one poor design.

There is a possibility that there may be some grit under one of the valves, or the valves themselves worn and leaking. I would be inclined to buy a full kit complete with valves etc. Also check there is not too much wear on the pump operating lever that the push rod bears on.
Sid.

yes, f-12's have a fuel pump

hmmm usally you'll flood them, not have problems with too little. Sounds like to me that your just getting a gravity feed back up to the level of the tank and not any pumping of the fuel pump. Will it fire on either? If you go with a new kit, I'd talk with Gordon Rice of Rice equipment, somebody with have his number. You should also look at the fuel pump rod as well as the lines. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

When my dad first bought the tractor it ran for a few weeks then it started to spit and sputter and then quit running. So he tinkered with it and found that the pump wasn"t working. So he ran it for a couple of years with a gas can ontop of the hood, with the filler neck down and the air vent ontop and a clear gas line to the carb and it ran perfect. I finally ordered a pump kit from the Fordson House in Escanaba,MI, about 3 hrs from were we live, and Skip told me that there is another pump kit that had some springs included, but he didn"t stock that kit. So we have all new gaskets and diaphram, so I will have to check the rod, or the whole pump may be no good, we have clear fuel lines on it, so we can see how the fuel level.

first, rebuild your pump. [springs and diaphram too]. thats the time to check the rod to the cam. check tee in front of tank. should spit excess gas into tank that carb does not use.if you have a vent on top of hood. make sure its open and not plugged. make sure carb filter[screen], is not plugged. check carb float for correct level so its opening needle valve. sometimes you have to undo gas line at carb and crank over till gas gets there, sometimes youll get a vacuum that wont let gas get there. [just turn off mag]. make sure oil is in aircleaner to correct level or gas will not draw. sometimes you can pull tractor to start first time, then you can hand crank it over. hope this helps. pg

A. I was under the impression that the F-series tractors were gravity feed like all the gas Farmalls that came after.

B. The fuel pump may have been "rebuilt" incorrectly, if indeed there's supposed to be a fuel pump.

C. The fuel pump may be worn so badly that it's just plain unfixable.

D. There may be an obstruction in the line, and that's as far as the pump will pump before the air pressure gets so high that it can't pump any further.
